Be careful. i do not know. set at highest setting and let it run. while running, reduce setting to the lowest over a few minutes. at a lower setting you should be able to tell that the compressor has started. run it for 5 minutes, then
unplug your machine. next, feel the cooling coils to see if they are very cold. if they are not cold, your unit needs to be serviced.

Hi,
There are many reasons why a dehumidifier willnot work or collect water.
Here is a tip that I wrote to help people to figure out what is going wrongwith their dehumidifier
First, make sure the humidistat isn't set too high by adjusting it to
the lowest humidity setting and running it again.
Next, test the
dehumidifier by placing it in a closed bathroom with a hot shower
running.
If you don't see water collecting in the unit after several
minutes, turn the unit off and clean all dehumidifier filters and
coils.
If, after adjusting the settings and cleaning the unit, you
still don't see water collecting, you may have a refrigeration issue.
This situation will have to be addressed by a qualified technician.
A dehumidifier heats and cools the air to remove moisture. Most are like a small air cond. The Condenser coil is right in front of the evap.coil. So the compressor may not be coming on. Does it sound the same as before? It may be low on freon. You will have to get in there and listen and feel the lines at or near the compressor, Learn how to get down in there to the compressor. Run it for 10 Mins. unplug it, open it up, and feel the lines. Some lines should be or can be HOT to the touch. Some should be cool. The smaller the line the hotter it should be, and the compressor should be warm (to hot) to the touch. repost for more info.
There was a recall on these - it depends on the age. I bought mine in 2003 or 2004, and they sent a repairman out to replace a circuit board. Call Maytag to see if yours was in the recall.
