I have a Panasonic Proj. TV, PT4743G which I bought about 54 years ago. Based on what I've been reading on this site, I thought I had a convergence problem (red won't line up) and now I'm getting some bowing effect. Authorized Panasonic dealers took TV today and did full diagnostic test. Said it's a power supply problem which is causing the convergence problem. Power supply would cost $500 - $550 (includes labor) and the convergence just needs an overhaul after that. 1 year warranty on part and 90 day on labor. They claim that all should be good after the power supply fix and the overhaul on the convergence.
Does this sound right (ie. price and power supply issue).
I need to get back to them to authorize the repair or say forget it and count my losses!! What's going on with these new tv's??? I have the old ****tube from 20 years ago that still works!!

Re: Power supply/convergence issue...
Your Projo is a complicated piece of equipment, involving 3 picture tubes (like 3 tv's), convergence failures are extremely common, I dont think $550 is totally unreasonable, but I dont think it is a power supply issue if it is just effecting 1 color, usually it would cost around $100 parts $300 labor to repair, might be a little high, I suppose they are also charging you for pickup and delivery, I hate taking sets into office as that sometimes jars stuff loose or cracks boards.

yes and also possibly the low ohm resistors. You can get the PT53WX53 convergence kit which fits your model from www.tvrepairworld.com which has the 2 ICs and associated resistors plus the CD with repair instructions.
Ur tv have a problems, with it power supply board. That the board where the power a/c cord plug into it.When can u spare about $100.Tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole new refurbish power supply board for the replacement, will solved this problems.
Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com
Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out
Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.
Common Symptoms include....
Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.
Thats the error code for the convergence circuit shutting the set down The PT4743G uses the PT53WX53G convergence repair kit which is available from www.tvrepairworld.com the kit contains the parts and the CD with detailed repair instructions.
Is the power indicator flashing three times? If so the Ics have shorted shutting the set down. You will need two STK392-110 convergence ICs. You can get replacement ICs at the following link with free installation instructions. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
Rainman, can`t really be of any great help on this one, both techs can be right, the chirp is exactly as you thought, the set is trying to come on but there is a short in the set and it`s shutting down because of the short, could be convergence, low voltage power supply, high voltage power supply, until a tech gets in there and starts un-loading circuits it`s impossible to say where the short is, gonna have to call someone out for this one, good luck with it, BMW Rider
