Cable representative says I need a firmware update to my RCA DCM425 modem. How is this done? Is this a DOCSIS modem?

BROADBAND SPEED FLUCTUATES WILDLY: My broadband speed fluctuates wildly from 1Mbps to nearly 30Mbps. Most of the time it is just much, much slower than it should be. This causes problems, whether simply downloading or playing video games with friends over the internet (VERY frustrating). This has been going on for a couple of months. The cable provider can't detect any problems from their headquarters.

Pull out your owner's manual and read how to sign in to the administrator panel. Then go to the maintenance section and click on check for firmware upgrades.

SOURCE: RCA DCW615R WIRELESS Cable Gateway , Factroy Installed Firmware needed.

I had the same issue with my RCA DCW615R. First time my ISP Comcast flashed it back to the old version. This time I could not find anyone who new how to do that. I used to have the software and I have searched the net. Seems they provider RCA does not have it.

This time I called Comcast because I noticed that the 192.168.0.1 brought me to their software update. They supplied me with the user name and password. I was able to get into the firmware and change all the settings using the new firmware. I think the only reason they gave it to me is because my printer is a network printer and it would not work unless I could access the firmware.

The old 192.168.100.1 does not work anymore because that was Cable Modem mode or CM mode. The new address 192.168.0.1 does work but you will need the user name and password from your ISP, this is RG mode or residential gateway mode.

Liked the old firmware better but they both do the same thing. Seems the Gateway works better with the new update. Still I would like to find the old firmware not sure why RCA doesn’t have it.

SOURCE: trouble connecting netgear wireless router to rca modem DCM425

First try connection the Yellow ethernet cable from the rca modem to your computer's network connection. If you get a connection this way, then your modem will work with a ethernet cable. If not, then call Comcast for help. The modem ethernet out to computer port must be connected to the wan line of the router. Then you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer network connection to one of the 4 ports of the router. For wireless connections you must set up the router and wireless adaptor with the same settings to connect. Follow the routers directions.

SOURCE: i lost the disk for the RCA DCM425 digital cable

Hello Friend,
If you didn't change anything in modem side, that means the modem is still connected to internet. in this case you can connect the modem to your computer via the Ethernet cable. with this cable you will not need to install anything on your computer, just plug the Ethernet cable to the RJ45 port and start browsing internet.
The only case when you will need the drivers is when you want to connect the modem to your PC via USB cable.
Here is a link where you can find everything about your modem: quick guide, user manual, usb drivers ...
Best Regards,

Comcast cable says they don't update firmware. l have a SB6141 motorola DOCSIS 3.00 and l just upgraded to 105 mbps. l'm hardwired to my modem. l'm only getting 32 power level ?

You may need to enable IPV6. All Comcast modem updates are done automatically. I would contact ARRIS for additional assistance. Comcast also has a helpful online community.

I want to replace RCA DCM425 cable modem with new, compatible device to continue feeding internet (by ethernet cable) to my desktop (like the present) and provide new WiFi to the home. Please advise. Thank...

You have two choices to achieve your goal (which I understand is to have both you desktop plugged by Ethernet and WiFi throughout your home) :

1. The cheapest way :
You need not be replacing your cable modem, but adding a router to it. There are numerous routers which are WiFi enabled. You can then plug your PC to the router and have WiFi.

2. The cleanest (but less cheap) way :
There are cable modems on the market which will do the job, like the Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem. Once plugged in place of your old modem, depending on your provider, you will either have to download and install the software for your new modem (which should be prompted on your PC when you try to access the Internet), or call the provider to activate the new modem.

Will this work with Comcast broadband and Windows 7?

This modem will work with Comcast High Speed Internet.
You will have to contact Motorola for drivers for the Windows 7.

It does matter how fast your internet speed is,anything faster than 20meg,will need a Docsis 3.0 modem.

My ISP is Mediacom and since I began using them I have had the same RCA / Thomson 425 Modem. This was years ago and during that time I have made the upgrade to "wireless network", 802.11g to...

Firstly it makes no difference if you have a wireless network on 802.11n unless all the devices on the network are using 802.11n adapters. This means if you have a router or a wifi phone working on basic 802.11g (55mbs data) the whole network will run at the speed of the slowest device.

Now about the Thomson modem DCM425 and the ISP service. The maximum speed Docsis 2.0 protocol can support is 38mbps. The maximum Docsis 3.0 offered in US is around 120mbs. The Max service offers about 20mps (see link) which means you are within the capacity of the cable modem.

Hope this helps.

Paying 50Mbps service on this modem (DCM425) but only getting a downloading speed test between 2-10 Mbps. What's wrong? Is it a modem limiting issue involved? if so, am I supposed to be entitled a faster...

Who is your provider? The DCM425 is an OLD modem, its on the older DOCSIS standard and its only rated for something like 35-40mbps, i don't remember the exact number from the specs as we haven't been dealing with them here for about 8 years now. Upgrade the modem, go with something like the Surfboard SB6183 or SB6141, this depends on who your provider is also of course. If your current modem is a rental from your provider ask them for a new one, but if you want to get rid of the monthly rental fee get a new modem yourself. But i would find out what modem models are supported by your provider.
