Impedance setting on Yamaha AV Receiver

Impedance of my Front & Center speakers are 6 Ohms and my pair of surround speakers have an impedance of 8 Ohms. Can I set the impedance of my AV Receiver at 6 Ohms or just retain the unit's default impedance at 8 Ohms?

Hi. You can always use a Receiver with an output impedance that is lower than the speakers input impedance.Problems arise when you try to use a Receiver with a higher output impedance than the Speakers input impedance.

Receiver 6 ohms speakers 8 ohms......YES..
Receiver 8 ohms Speakers 6 ohms.......YES, WITH CAUTION

I have a Yamaha H/T receiver rated @ 95 watts. The front and rear speakers a hms and the center channel is 4 ohms. Is this a dangerous setup for my receiver to function in?

You seem to be confusing the power of the Receiver with the impedance. Watts is how much power or how loud it can go. While ohms is the impedance of the device. The receiver will have an lowest ohms setting for it's speakers. For example if it says 4 ohm you can connect any speaker of 4 ohms and above to it. However if it said 8 ohms then you should not connect any speaker lower than that.
Each channel will have it's own power level measured in Watts. Some units have the same level for all channels, others have different levels for the channels. You can connect any speaker that has a wattage greater than the channel's total max power. If you connect say a 50 watt speaker to a 70 watt amp, it will work, but you must never take the volume to even near the max or it will blow the speaker.
Anything with a mono soundtrack will only decode on the left and right channels. Unless the unit has something like an all channels setting. So the unit seems to be working fine. Mono films have no surround effects applied to them, so the indications are simply showing they are working. They of course feed no surround to other channels, as none are present.

No, you don't want to do that. The Ohm output on the amplifier must match the speakers. Run 8 Ohm speakers on 8 Ohm and run all your speakers on the same impedance (Ohms). Your gonna burn your amplifier up if you run different impedances.

4 ohm speakers on Yamaha HTR 5540

Model number of the Lux? The only unknown to me regarding the answer is if the Lux speakers are designed for non-Lux attachment. If there are molded connectors on their leads I would be cautious as that is usually the manufacturer's subltlke clue that you really don't want toi mix them with other makers. If they're bare wire I think you're ok.

The impedance selector on the receiver supports minimum 4-ohm front and 6-ohm center and rear, so you'd be marginal on those last two, but barring excessive high volumes I'd think it would work. The powered sub is supported and its impedance spec is irrelevant.

Just curious, is this an upgrade in electronics? From what?

Can I mix 6 and 8 ohm speakers?

I would not suggest mixing. Use either 6 or 8 only but i highly suggest not mixing unless it gives the option to set a certain input for a certain Ohm. If you mix your either going to mess up a speaker or the receiver itself.

With my RX-V663 can I use presence speakers less than 8 ohms?

Basically you can use any speaker as long as you use the volume button wisely. Damage will only occur if you raise the volume level to the extremes. Bigger speakers should be no problem, if you want bi-amping, your speakers should support that as well.

Denon AVR-2307 Protection Circuit Activated permenantly

The speakers are 4 ohm speakers, a guy on another chat site sent me a link to the impedance curves http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/s...t-v2-fs/page-4

He agreed to that there was a mismatch as the unit has plenty of fresh air around it, plus all the speaker cables have been tested and installed correctly.

So, off to the store where I got it from tomorrow.

Most better low frequency speakers (woofers) measure about 6 ohms because the addition of crossover will bring the impedance up to 8 ohms. Even without the crossover, 6 ohms will not harm the amp or speakers

Do all speakers need to have the same impedance? (Protect mode)

Amplifiers sometimes like to have "balanced loads" on them, and this may be the case with your unit, meaning yes, all the impedances should match.

Judging by the impedance numbers you provided, you should be all set. You really want to avoid having something like 2 ohms on the left side and 8 ohms on the right side - grossly imbalanced. I don't see any problems with what you're going to run.
