Refrigerator will not get cold, but freezer works

2 days ago, the frigerator stopped cooling. the freezer is working fine. it is a top mount frost proof fridge/freezer. it will be 3 years old this month. the first 3 months after we bought it, it stopped working 3 times. i know of one time it broke, it was because the defrost timer was bad. (within the first month of having it) so....any suggestions? or advice?

ok, i unplugged the fridge for about 20 minutes. plugged it back in too a min for the fan in the bottom back to begin running. husband said the compressor part was hot. he took the back wall piece off in the freezer and behind the ice maker what a large chunk of ice frozen solid. he is there now removing that....
if that helps out with the diagnosis any

i cant hear it, if that would be the way i would tell. i read somewhere you can check it with an amp meter. i pretty sure my husband has one of those. when i touch the compressor it is hot.

there is also water leaking from behind the plastic piece the light is attached to on the top wall of the refrigerator. its not alot. it drips down onto the top shelp if the refrigerator.

i am also not sure how i put my post under the amana side by side, but that is not what kind it is. it is a frigidaire frost free top freezer/refrigerator.

ok, i checked it an hour or so later. it seems to be running. well, i can hear a noise now. the fan next to the compressor is also running. the compressor is still hot, and when i listen it makes a little chirping noise, like crickets.

got the problem fixed. it was that my fan in the freezer had burnt out, and therefor no air was circulating into the refrigerator part. i went and got a new motor and put it in myself, and its good to go. (my husband was in awe :) )

Do you know if the compressor in the back is running? If you can check that out get back to me and we can go from there. Most times if the fan in the freezer is running the defrost timer is ok.

SOURCE: refrigerator will not get cold, but freezer works

Make sure your fan is working ,its located behind the freezers back wall. If it is working the vent from the freezer down to the refrigerator may be blocked (usually with ice). With out a fan you have no circulation but your freezer may look likes its working,it may last 3 days. Also if you can move everything out unplug it turn it off w/ doors open untill all traces of ice are gone this will free up any clogged tubes. Good luck.

Fridge isn't staying cold, the freezer works OK.

if your freezer is working fine and you hear your compressor running you could have a frozen drain tube or more than likely the evaperator motor fan has failed.this is the fan that circulates the cold air from freezer throughout frigerator.what kind of unit is it?side by side or top mount freezer or what?let me know

Why are only drawers in fridge cold & not making ice?

Contact a professional. Sounds like either your damper door is not operating correctly and not letting enough cool air from the freezer enter, or there is an air leak that is making ice form .

I have a GE side by side refrigerator, model GSL85JFPHBS. It sstopped working altogether last month. first the refrigerator stopped working, two day later the freezer part stopped working. I had someone...

I think you meant you have a GSL25JFPHBS (not 85).
It sounds like you have a defrost problem. If your refrig. was off for some time, like a day or more, or it was manually defrosted, it would work for about 2 weeks before the problem would re-occuer. This is caused by a build up of frost on the cooling coils, preventing air flow over them. Un-load the freezer and remove shelves and the back wall inside the freezer. Melt the frost with a hair blower, and replace the defrost heater (part # WR51X10055) and for good measure, replace the defrost thermistor (part # WR55X10025) located at the top of the cooling coils.

Warm frigerator

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.
