Camera takes one picture

Okay the camera niko cool pix will turn on but wont zoom in or out take one picture then it zooms in and out but will not take a picture. I can turn it off to get it to take another picture but it again will not zoom in or out.

    also the af light stays on until you take the picture

I have a Nikon s550 that I cannot get it to zoom in very well. I would like to be able to zoom in close on my daughter as she plays softball.
Your camera has a 5X zoom which is not great at getting real close to players on a softball field. The new "super-zoom" cameras are better suited for that. You could try to move closer to her for better results.

STILL PICTURES NOT IN FOCUS
Sounds like camera shake. When you use the zoom you get more camera shake. Try taking pix without zoom and see if you still have blurred photos.

Use only optical zoom and use a tripod.

Is this camera only have a digital zoom? If it has an optical zoom as well, you could have a setting that is set to ignore digital zoom and because your lighting conditions, zooming in and out is not currently possible because the aperture can not be opened enough to light you take a picture without being blurry. The auto focus would be taking priority in stopping you from taking a picture.

Blurred pictures
If you are at maximum zoom ther likelyhood is that the shutter speed it long and you have camera shape coming in with will be amplified at high magnification.
Try shorter Zoom and non zoom pix they are Ok - then it is the camera shake thing.
A Tripod or a place to hold the camera steady is the remedy.
