Re: power goes off
Possibly losing battery contact
Clean the contacts -take betts out clean the ones in the base[inside] of the chamber with an eraser on the end of pencil.
Polish up the lid contact.
Reinsert batts- and try.
If it goes off try pressing home the lid - does it stay on?
pack out the lit with a small piece of foil.
Still in trouble?
Contact Pentax technical Support- in case this is an issue.
A repair is not likely to be cost effective however.

It sounds like you may have a bad lens assembly, but you did not mention if it seems to be fully extending or not. If it is sticking, it will usually buzz. If it fails to open all the way, it will turn itself back off. This sounds like what may be happening. I can fix this for $40, or you can send it to Pentax in Arizona. I don't know what they charge for a lens assembly, but the minimum charge for this camera seems to be about $90. If you just want to get rid of this camera, I also buy all Pentax Option a10, a20, a30, a40 cameras.

If properly captured pictures can be played back fine ( quality is ok ) but images look 'noisy' i.e. color and resolution not what it should be then your camera has a faulty CCD sensor. Ask Pentax if they do this model with this problem free of charge ( most manufacturers repair CCD problems free of charge ).
My optio t10 did basically the same thing...turned on, lens goes out, then automatically shut off. I took the advice of a solution listed here for another problem...hit the camera. For whatever reason it worked.
