Re: How to Adjust the Laser
If you are trying to adjust an old laser, don't bother it was set at the factory and the laser is wearing out, not going out of alignment. It's very common.
It's been a long time since I read directions for this but as I recall it required an oscilloscope and was in no way easy. If you are up to the task I can try to find those directions again.

easy capri laser?? ford , 4cyl in line --- 1 down adjust 8 =9
1 down adjust 7 =9 and so on 8 down adjust 1 =9 whatever you adjust the numbers add up to 9 ,ford laser capri then tappet settings used to be something like 14 inlet and 18 exhaust but as no doubt the rocker fingers are worn and the push rod cups the 12 and 15 may be better
Some clutches are not adjustable, depends if it is hydraulicly operated or by cable.
the adjustment is usually down by the bell housing where the clutch lever is. It will have a cable attached to it with an adjustment or a little hydraulic cylinder, with or without an adjustment. Just adjust until the pedal has about one half to one inch of free play.
If you know how, disassemble the dvd player and adjust a little screw on the laser head assembly, then try to play CD, if it doesn't read adjust some more till it reads. If it doesn't help, probably laser head assembly needs replacing, which is expansive, it would be easier to get a new dvd player.
There actually are 2 adjustable potentiometers. To find them unscrew DVD tray and flip it over. Adjust only one, first from ribbon connector. First mark somehow its original position. then start turning clockwise a hair at the time until it start playing disks again. I just fixed mine. Good luck.
Laser diode beam not positioned correctly. Turn the machine off and back on and see if it goes away. You can run sp 2109-3 or 2109-4 in the service mode to adjust the beam in service mode by pressing on the yellow button. pressing the 107 keys and holding down on the clear button.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, you probably need a laser which we have one for sale here.
This is the most common of the two problems with ps2 the one you have is the second most common problem the first being the laser itself not working and then you problem disk not spinning. As you know the laser is moving the rules out the door catch mechanism being a problem so all thats left is the laser unit itself now your problem is the motor on the laser not working but the big problem you have is you just cant replace the motor on its own it comes as one unit with the laser. Now buying one isnt a problem neither is fitting it but the problem is calibrating the new laser to do this you nedd osciloscope and these cost $1000 to buy so unless you have one then this is a problem also if you take it in to be repaired the repair cos allone would cost more than a new ps2 so it just isnt worth repairing if you look on a well known auction site you will see thousands of ps2 with your problem they just dont repair them any more its just not worth it. youd be better of buying a new one it would be cheaper than the repair and also buying a new one means that it will last a bit longer. Say you get yours repaired then next week it overheats then you have another problem related to the age of the console so at the end of the day it would be best to buy a new let me know if you need more help or advice. Also the problem with the slimline one is you can adjust the laser because on the bigger ps2 you could adjust the laser by hand and get it to work again without any special tools but sony done away with this feature so that they got people to pay for repairs sorry i couldnt give you good news ok
Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue?
You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues.
Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.
first do what i did. get a dvd movie,a ps one game,a cd based ps2 game (timesplitters, rune, dynasty warriors 2,half life)a dvd based ps2 game, and a scratched ps2 game.
first adjust the azimuth(the torx screw to the left of the laser} make sure you use a cue tip and 91% alcohol on the lens and under the lens(you have to remove the black cover off the laser). I just got a broken ps2 for 5 bucks and that made it work perfectly.make the azimuth adjustments in 1/8 turns. try all games and especially the dvd movie
carefully pull the white plastic wheel out of the top cover for the dvd drive. and pop that on the disk while its in the drive. turn it on and note what happens. if a disk is in the drive before it's powered on you should never see the browser it should just boot.If not you have problems.
once all disks are booting good get a problem disk (I used a scratched tony hawk 3) and if the audio skips or freezes adjust the white cog wheel counterclockwise in 5 click intervals until it works perfect.
if you are lucky it will work like new if not you might have a laser voltage problem and to fix that you need a variable scope ososcillator ( i know i missplelled it) under the laser is 2 pots to adjust the voltage for the cd laser and the dvd laser. the left is the cd one if its facing you. you can find the proper waveform pattern online in various places.i would just buy a Used ps2 because there preety chaep and definetly cheaper than the stuff needed to adjust the voltage correctly.IF YOU TRY TO ADJUST THE LASER YOU MAY BURN IT OUT.I did on my first one but since my friend was using it as a window stop and i got it for free i donn't care.So hopefully it works out for you guys. if i were you just buy a SEGA DREAMCAST it has none of these problems and is cheap as hell..............................................
