When I first installed the printer software it worked fine when I disconnected the usb fromt he laptop and then reconnected it windows prompted me to install again I cancelled this step as the software ws already installed, but it kept prompting me to install. I did reinstall because I was getting error messages that the software was not fully installed. by this time there are two printers installed but when I try the print from either one it says failure to communicate with the printer. It will scan but not print. I has to uninstall all the printer software and reinstall. I can't keep installing the software everytime I connect the usb cable up is there anything i can do?
Ok Guys! I found the solution to the nasty "Problem communicating with the printer" AT LAAAST !
I have a lexmark 2480 and I recently upgraded to windows 7 ( I had the same problem with Vista earlier as well) so this problem has nothing to do with your operating system. The mistake I was making was that I first connected the cable and then began installing the setup.exe file. I never got the printer to work after that though strangely the scanner seems to work. I even enabled bidirectional port but it was no help. I tried unchecking the check box that said "save power...." in the usb port device I accessed using the device manger. No. Nothing works.
Finally I found the answer. I uninstalled lemxark. I disabled the firewall. Then Disconnected the cable. Guys this is important you have to disconnect the cable and then only hit setup.exe. You must connect the cable only when the setup asks you to. And it works. I used the setup in my CD which I got when I bought the printer. Despite the fact that my OS is windows 7, 64 bit all works fine!
take care, hope this helps people like me who had to tear my hair apart for 3 hours+.

This is a problem for folk with lappies who disconnect and the Windows prompts to reinstall each time. I don't know a simple answer .It is a Windows problem not the printers So cancel one printer installation and leave the original. Try to cancel the prompt when it comes up again. or take the software right out and plug the printer in. then when the prompt comes up- ignore the CD and select the 'select from list' Choose the make then the model. When closing down windows only remove the printer when the computer is shut right down. and plug in before you fire it up. Then the computer will not know it has been without.
