Remotes only allow you to avoid walking across the room to touch the unit for certain functions - like POWER. They don't actually enable or disable its ability to turn on if power is available. Walk over and touch the power control. If it turns on the remote is still malfunctioning.
For the love of god, do NOT listen to Paul Sager - HDMI is *always* better than component. HDMI is a pure digital signal, offering the cleanest possible signal you can offer an HDTV. Component wiring is analog, and while good, it is by no means as good as HDMI.

Check the remote control for its infrared emission. Check it with fresh batteries. If you wish to get more details about how to check a remote control, please visit this site. One among the posts has details about it. Surf the site with patience. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
It will work without the remote, but can ve very unconfortable. If you have a webcam or digital camera or cell phone with camera, then point it to the small lamp in front of the remote and press any button. If the light blinks or keeps on, then the problem may be on the radio receptor. If light is dark, then take it to an electronics store an ask for an INFRARED LED DIODE replacement. This should work well.
