So I acquired a 36A50 for a deal - free (or was it?)
It was working well for about a week and then the shadow like lines began at the bottom of the screen - this didn't bother me being this TV cost me nothing at this point. Then the screen (V-hold) began to mess up and the image was retained on the top 1/2 to 3/4 of the viewing area. Lastly it's gone to that bright white line of death across the center of the tube. I know it's a circuit or solder issue because when you smack it it used to come back on and work fine, now it'll just tease you and make you think it's gonna come back and it doesn't. So I want to know what to replace - I am fairly able to fix things, just need details on what and where to replace. Thanks! You're friendly trash scavenger.

Yes...this TV may be repaired. The line you describe is in the center and is horizontal across the TV. You will need to resolder the vertical IC pins. This vertical IC is mounted on a large heatsink. Under the board you will see there are 5 or 7 pins that will have rings around them. Resolder these. And you should replace two or three capacitors that are next to this IC. A bad cap will overheat an IC and separate the solder grounds. If you can find my expertise page on this website, you will see the repair in more detail. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support.
you'll need to replace bad capacitors on the vertical circuit stage , no expensive but you need the basic knowledge, and the tools to do it your self , if not . you need a tech
