I have had my dvd recorder for less than 2 years. For the last 6 months its seems to get stuck while playing recorded dvd's. It will play fo a bit and then freeze on a frame and not play any further. With some dvd's it won't fast foward anything more than x2. It also spits recordable dvd's out, saying they are invalid, even if I recorded on those same dvd's the week before.
It is not overheated, or transported and a dvd that worked last night won't work the next day. It is very temperamental!

If it won't PLAY VHS tapes it must have a serious mechanical problem (if it even loads) or its heads are glommed up, so it obviously won't record them either. When's the last time you ran a cleaning tape through it?
Solve the load or playback problem and it will probably record.
Time and poor storage conditions are the mortal enemies of tapes. Store the in a 'played
I have found that you get what you pay for in electronics. I bouoght a Cyber Home recorder, it lasted about 15 months before it went out.
I had another off brand ( don't remember name) that also didn't last. I have an older, I think it's a Panasonic, at least 5-6 years old. It won't reord on DVD+R, only on DVD/RW discs.
So, first I say you bought ****.
Buy name brand only it lasts longer.
Second, these things don't last to long.
I have a player only that is 5 + years old that still plays movies.
I haven't used the Panasonic for about a year. I do use it to PLAY movies still.
Mine was doing the same.last night i opened up the machine & took out the cd drive and opened it up.I cleaned the laser with a cotton swab and manually pushed the laser back to the front of the unit as far as it could slide on the 2 little posts it slides along.
I have an LG DVD Recorder Model DR 389. It first stopped recording (was getting message "regional code incorrect" & was playing DVDs. Now when a recorded or pre-recorded DVD is put in - it just keeps saying "Reading" .... and doesn't play.
Could be the dvd player/lens. The player sucks up dust through the player's caddy and after a while it won't read discs anymore. A cd cleaner or a good (gently dosed) blow with compressed air might help.
