I have had my dvd recorder for less than 2 years. For the last 6 months its seems to get stuck while playing recorded dvd's. It will play fo a bit and then freeze on a frame and not play any further. With some dvd's it won't fast foward anything more than x2. It also spits recordable dvd's out, saying they are invalid, even if I recorded on those same dvd's the week before. It is not overheated, or transported and a dvd that worked last night won't work the next day. It is very temperamental!
Leave your dvd player off for about 1 week.if it still do the same thing then you will have to replace it.good luck

If it won't PLAY VHS tapes it must have a serious mechanical problem (if it even loads) or its heads are glommed up, so it obviously won't record them either. When's the last time you ran a cleaning tape through it?
Solve the load or playback problem and it will probably record.
Time and poor storage conditions are the mortal enemies of tapes. Store the in a 'played
