SOURCE: Shark Euro Pro Iron turns
I was having the exact same problem. It happened infrequently, then over time it got worse. I would jiggle the cable to get it to turn back on again, and that worked for about six months. Eventually the iron was unusable, I had to hold the cable in one spot and it would go on for about 30 seconds, then die out.
I decided to go on a little adventure inside the iron to see what the problem was. I was convinced the cable was frayed on the inside from rotating so much. After unscrewing the bottom, I found there was plenty of rust inside the iron, which had gotten all over the contact points from the AC cable from the wall connects to the heating element. If I moved the cable back and forth, I could hear it sparking and get a good connection.
It doesn't appear that the rust was from water leakage inside the iron, but rather steam produced while ironing. After cutting the wires and soldering the connection, the iron works fine again. It took about 1/2 hour to do from start to finish.
I would recommend getting a different brand, it only took mine a year from purchase date to fail.
SOURCE: It shuts itself off
The SHARK ELECTRONIC Iron is equipped with an electronic auto-off. The electronic auto-off switches the iron off if it has been left standing unmoved in any position (sideways, flat or upright) for approximately 7-9 minutes. A red light on the LED display panel will flash when the iron switches itself off. (Fig. 7) To switch the iron back on, just shake the iron side-to-side several times.

It is quite possible that this is a defect in the shark G1490F... I had the same problem and it was a crack in the water holding tank caused by tightening the two front screws (hidden) that hold the tank to the base... It seemed fine at first but after a full heating it developed a crack where it had been weakened when it was assembled... I suggest returning it or if warranty is up , throw it away and get something else..

Hi,
Here is a tip that will help you to troubleshoot your iron and figure out what is wrong with it.

the lights you witness are correct. once the iron has reached tempreture.
ensure the iron is stored in an upright position between ironing items if left laying down the iron may switch off as an anti-burn or fire safety feature as if left unattended. with the iron placed on its back plate with its point facing upwards the iron should stay on.
I hope this was useful.
