I appreciate the attempt but the problem is either the DVD drive itself or the motherboard/connections. I didn't see a way to add drivers for a device that doesn't show up in device manager. Thanks for the effort.

You opened Device Manager, Did you see ANYTHING listed as UNKNOWN DEVICE? If not reseat the DVD rom drive and reboot the machine. AGAIN, it's a common problem when you do a OS upgrade. It worked before the OS upgrade , Right?

  • Anonymous Jan 15, 2013

The DVD drive does not appear as an option when I try to boot from it or show in any way in device manager...all devices are there but no optical drives and nothing like an unknown device or something with an exclamation point. I tried loading an Adaptec storage driver (the only thing close to being a device like a dvd drive to install in device manager that I could see) and that didn't work either. I did pull it out and reseat it. If I plug in an external USB DVD it shows in device manager and in explorer and I can boot from it. A relative gave the laptop to my cousin and she couldn't say if the drive ever worked. I was going on the possibility that it was the Win7 upgrade since I'd heard of it before with HP computers and I can't get it back to Vista without disks. I don't have a spare internal laptop drive so I am going to just use the external my Dad gave me. I think the drive or motherboard are dead and I do not want to spend any more time on it. Thanks for trying.

It's a common problem when upgrading a OS? Is the DVD rom the only component that's missing a driver? Any Unknown Devices? Have you opened the Device Manager and looked for the DVD? In Device Manager, Scan For Hardware Changes. Not Listed? Have you done ALL your windows Updates? All the HP updates? Try the driver here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-58707-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=2093&product=3548266&sw_lang= Download the software and SAVE to a folder. Modify the compatibility of the software from Win 7, using this procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-compatibility-mode/ BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A RESTORE POINT. With this procedure: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-restore-point.

Thanks for the fast response but it's not working in the bios, either. I think I need to start there as it is not in device manager. I know this may mean the dvd drive or mother board is toast but I think it had to do with upgrading to windows 7 from vista.

Again, it's a common problem in OS upgrades. In Device Manager, Is it the only thing that's not working? No unknown Devices listed? In Device Manager do a SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES. In me previous post I listed the procedures , and Driver location.

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2013

No, it is not listed in Device Manager and Scan for Hardware Changes didn't find anything. System will not boot to the DVD/CD drive with a system repair disk inserted. If I plug in a USB DVD/RW then it will boot.

Don't I need to get the DVD working in the bios before I do anything in windows where it doesn't even show in My Computer or Device Manager probably because the bios doen't see it?

  • max carson
    max carson Jan 14, 2013

At this point , try anything. If you load the driver the BIOS will see the DVD.

After installing windows 7 on my DV 9820us it worked fine for some days but suddenly the web cam and DVD writer stopped working. no drive in device manager. i have tried all possible solutions but still no...

are you internet connected ? does MS fail Plug and play now>?
connected to the internet, , sure, this is so common...
win7 32bit or 64?????????

well you skipped step 1.
what is step1 well that it get the driver from HP first
so you have them before and to make sure there even are w7 drivers for old cam and old dvd.
do not flash BIOS ever, it does NOT contain any DRIVERS.
why not do all this at HP , first.
but guess what HP only uses VISTA and offers no W7 or newer drivers.
for this exact PC.
so try the vista drivers.
vista 32

this is all there is.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-dv9800-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/3675209/model/3689896

for your PC, if 64bit, backup one page and click that.

the drivers can be force loaded from vista to 7
by right clicking them eg: sp12345.exe and pick compatiblilty tab
and pick VISTA

if that dont work good luck
btw: the usb 2 ports need to work first. HP uses that for the cam
so upgrading is not easy is it.
lacking drivers First. we always get them first the leap to updating or it gets x10 more harder. we can talk harder all day. long. ask.

My dvd drive is not recognized by Device Manager/My Computer. Best Buy replaced it, but it's still not working, and I'd rather not have them take it in for another 3 weeks. It still opens/spins, it just...

WoW, that one is a good one.
If you are using Windows OS go to device manager, hardware, uninstall or remove device (DVD player).
Turn off the computer HARD BOOT/Cold Boot, not just reboot.
Start the computer and it should find your DVD add the drivers and install them. That should do it.
NOT all Windows versions are exactly the same, but, once you get to the device manager you should find remove/add devices.

I'm trying to upgrade from 64-bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7. When I run the installation disk, I'm getting the following error message, which appears to be contradictory in my opinion:...

I have seen this type of problem before, the only real way around it is to install a fresh copy of windows 7 not to upgrade, you will receive a message that asks you if you want to keep the previous windows in a folder called old windows, from there you will be able to access all your old files and programs, be aware though some programs may not work on windows 7, and you may need to have updated drivers for the systems peripherals. So when you run the windows 7 disk choose clean install and go from there. i hope this helps
