I have the same problem, just talked to garmin about it, they said send the unit in and they will send me a rebuilt for $275, just swap it out for me, I will think about it for a day or two. Tech guy told me the unit lost it operating system, they can only fix it in house.

I have a same problem, and I think I can fix it, may be not. Any how, I bougth a cornice drive on ebay and as soon I will get it. I will load my maps on to it with usb connector after that I take it a part and remove it from its case. Then I will take my Garmin Streetpilot 2620 apart remove the old cornice drive and install the new drive. I suspect it will work like a charm.

In February I posted that I will replace the cornice drive on my 2620 because I had this problem GArmin 2620 - 019d1f6.jpg Well I did that, but could not fix the problem. Garmin is asking $275 to replace my unit, I did not wanted to pay them that much. So I bought a 2610 at eBay for a $100 and don't have to worry about hard drives any longer.
To get this screen on a GPS push "menu+find" and then turn on unit. It will show this diagnostic screen.

When i loaded the 4.80 update, it started doing this. Loading map, then reboot, loading map, then reboot. After a while it would boot up. If the unit was warmed up, it would not do it. I back-reved the 4.80 to 4.70. It erased all my way points and reset to factory defaults. Upgradeing to version 4.80 and other versions did not erase waypoints or reset your settings. I have City Navigator v7 and not v8. 4.80 seems more tailored to V8 and 4.70 is more for v7. It seems to work ok now, but need to try it out a few more times.

Garmin nuvi 270 won't turn on

Stuck at the loading maps screen is often caused by a corrupted map or flash drive. The drive must be accessed in order to restore the corrupted map file or flash drive. More information can be found here:

The garmin 2620 will not load maps

You are caught in a loop most likely caused by a failed microdrive. Search Garmin 2620 cornice for a thread that is likely to provide the information about the failure you are experiencing. In short, if it is the Cornice drive that has failed you will find it very difficult to repair, if not impossible depending on your level of expertise and ability to find a used part for repair as the drives needed are no longer manufactured or readily available.

connect your GPS to your PC and load your local maps to the hard drive. Maybe update your firmware as well. Good luck.

Garmin streetpilot 2620

There is no reset button. Every time you turn off your Garmin and turn it back on it reloads everything fresh. What is likely the cause of what you are experiencing is a failed Cornice microdrive. It is near impossible to fix with the parts available today (May 2010) and it is more time management and cost effective simply to purchase a working 2610 from a third party site, or to purchase a new unit from the store that is still supported. In addition to the parts issue Garmin discontinued Map support for the 2620 (and 2610) in 2009.

Most likely your hard drive is gone bad. Push "menu+find" buttons then turn on, you will get diagnostic screen, it will show if your cornice drive is bad. It will say"Cornice Dive removed"4f3efc6.jpg
