During a second when switched on, Lcd Display started showing a bundle of vertical blue lines on its right side, but unit was still working fine. Then it went dark blue the next time and stayed so. Put new batteries and no change. Even more, have to remove the batteries from the casing to shut it off. Not a single switch works anymore. Is the chip cooked? As for the warranty, problem is that unit was received as a gift, sister lost the receipt, so can bring it back to the store. Unit is in mint condition, no rough handling, stored in a dry place, very little used.
Smells like lemon...
When I press the ON button and hold, the screen is black/grey flashing. I don't have the receipt, and I can't even remember where I bought it. The unit worked very well for the time I've had it, but a simple battery change shouldn't fry the unit. When I press the ON button and hold, the screen is black/grey flashing. Even though your sister has lost the receipt, many stores have the ability to look up purchases at the store provided she used a credit card. You can not do this over the phone. You will need to have your sister go to the store and ask them to look up her purchase with her credit card. If it is a recent purchase and still within the product warranty you may be able to get a replacement.
Good luck.

Line, faults & possible causes to LCD screen are given with illustrations. You can get an idea about the fault to an extent.
If your LCD TV or monitor has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following
symptoms, then it's a candidate for some new capacitors
- Flickering screen
- Screen image disappears after several seconds
- Dim screen
- Slow start
- Power LED on, but no picture
- Unusual colors and/or lines
The primary cause of LCD TV and monitor failure is caused by faulty capacitors. You can
examine the capacitors in your LCD TV or monitor and actually see if they are bad.
If they appear bulged on top, then they need to be replaced.
New capacitors will solve a host of problems in LCD monitors and TV's and will extend the life
of your monitor or TV by several years.
Take it to a repair shop.
the actuall screen LCD is bad.
in most cases.
supper common failure.. 2008 PC.
see page 31 , part 5 here. bingo, change that out.
there are 2 types used, only your full PC part number on
the service tag show this, post that and we go to the HP parts surfer and look it up.
the vertical blue lines indicate some interference from other electronic gadgets near your tv. it started showing up on my sony grand wega when i installed my wireless modem. i almost ordered a new rear projection lamp costing over $100 but decided to experiment. i first moved my desk computer farther away from the tv then isolated the wireless modem router by placing it inside a small glass - the vertical blue lines became lighter in color so i dedided to find another small glass that fit inside the first glass container then put the router in the double glass - no more blue lines and my wireless modem router still works.
do some deductive thinking to figure out what's messing up your tv and isolate the interference.
good luck!
tricky!! oh hi im Dyanne.. a totally unresponsive black screen can be th result of failure of th LCD or LCD inverter.( a specialized piece of electronics that energize th screen) to rule out th failure of th video display adapter or circuitry, try plugging in an external monitor..a standard pc monitor.. attached direct to th lappy. if it works, (as i susopect) th motherboard and video display are both working ok and its th LCD which is at fault. this can sometimes be repaired by a competent specialist. good luck xx
Had this same issue on right side of 52" about 1 inch from side but had 3 vertical lines that disappeared after 40 minutes. Have Samsung LNT5265FX/XXA and about 16 months old. LCD Panel itself had to be replaced to fix it, fortunately had extended service plan
I had the same happen to me.. it started with one white vertical line.. then got the whole rainbow (red, green, blue).. Solution: Try connecting an external monitor.. if there is no problems, then it's not the video card or chipset.. it's going to be the lcd.. you can get it on ebay for about $200.. hope this helps..
