It may or it may not allow this Check your manual . This facility is usually only incorportaed into High-Spec camera because of the high spped proccessing required to read and store images one after the other. Most camera take a few second to write the inage to the card. To take rapid shots need a large buffer memory. Yours may not have it. Check out is specifications.

How to use continuous shooting on canon powershot sx40

Set your camera to high speed continuous shooting, track the action, and just before the peak press and hold the shutter release button. The camera will take a series of pictures and hopefully one of them will catch the action at its peak.
If you're asking how to set the camera for high speed continuous shooting, Turn the mode dial to SCN, press the FUNC/SET button, select the overlapping rectangles, and press the DISP button. Full details are in the "High-Speed Continuous Shooting" section of the manual (page 74 in my copy). If you need a manual you may download one here.

How do I set my D70 for continuous shutter firing? I want to be able to hold the shutter button down and have it take continuous catures.

Turn the Command Dial while holding down the Shooting Mode button to cycle through the different shooting modes. The one you want is the overlapping frames. The shooting mode button is just to the left of the viewfinder, next to the Bracket button.

For full details, refer to the "Choosing a Shooting Mode" section in your manual.

The same thing happened to me. So frusterating! Make sure it is in shooting mode. Go to the shooting mode menu and go all the way down the page to "Distortion Control". Change it to off. Now you can select continuous mode.

Continuous mode

i think the frame rate is 1.3 frames per second.

Issue:
How do I set Continuous Shooting?
Solution: Setting Continuous Shooting mode PowerShot SD750 and SD1000.

Continuous Shooting In this mode, the camera shoots continuously while the shutter button is held down. Recording ceases when the shutter button is released. In addition, under the following conditions, continuous shooting can occur at a consistent interval until the SD card is full*.
  • A resolution and compression combination other than 145.gif and 129.gif is selected.
    * If continuous shooting suddenly stops, the SD card may be full.
Continuous shooting is available in all modes except 171.gif[AUTO], stitch_assist_icon.gif[Stitch Assist], coloraccentdropper.gif[Color Accent] and colorswapdropper.gif[Color Swap].
To set Continuous Shooting
  1. Press the cont_icon.gifbutton to display cont_icon.gif.

    cont_menu.gif
  2. Shoot the image.

The camera will continue to record successive images while the shutter button is fully pressed. Recording will cease when the shutter button is released, the card is full or the card does not support a write speed to allow continuous shooting to continue.
To Cancel Continuous Shooting
  1. Press the cont_icon.gif button twice to display single_icon.gif.
caution_a70.gifTo enhance the continuous shooting performance when you suspect the speed has dropped, you are recommended to format the SD card in the camera (Low Level Format) after you save all its images to your computer. note_icon_a70.gif
  • The interval between shots may lengthen slightly when the camera's built-in memory fills.
  • If the flash is firing, the interval between shots will lengthen to accommodate the flash's charging requirements.

Flash

Hey liz2007,
Some scene modes don't allow the flash to be used such as landscape, sports, sunset, dusk/dawn, night landscape, museum, fireworks, and copy modes. If anti-shake mode is selected the flash will not fire, and if the camera is set to continuous shooting mode the flash will not fire. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

Shooting Speed Dropped

You can perform a Low Level Format of a memory card with this camera. Select Low Level Format under the following circumstances: - The continuous shooting speed has dropped. - The read/write speed of a memory card has dropped. If you perform a Low Level Format, the read/write speed of the memory card may recover, or the continuous shooting speed may improve. A Low Level Format may require 2 to 3 minutes with some memory cards.
