Not sure how old your fridge is and the quality of your water; but my service manual says that 3-5 years is the average for most of those units. Regardless of the name on the door, there are only a few manufacturers.
Mine is an all in one unit and, while the dispensing was fine, the cubes wouldn't release. Metal parts corrode and plastic wears.
Sounds like a service call or a trip to the parts store if you think you can do it yourself.
There is a mechanical flap (trap door) that should open to allow ice that is being pushed by the auger in the bottom of the bin to fall out. Possibly the solenoid that opens the door does not work, or you just have an obstruction (piece of ice) preventing the door from opening far enough to allow the ice to pass through. Here is some helpful information and instructions.
I have the same problem. I am getting tired of having to clear it out about once a week. I take the ice holder out and empty it in a large bowl and remove any large, melted together pieces, then replace it. It works fine for a while.
If your refrigerator has an ice dispenser, you are probably used to getting ice right away when a lever or button is pressed. However, if you depress the ice maker button and nothing dispenses, there is an issue with your refrigerator. There are a few different reasons why an ice dispenser would suddenly not work. It is important to troubleshoot your refrigerator first to determine the problem. Some problems can be fixed at home, while others must be repaired by a professional
1 Remove the ice bin from the freezer and press the button on the front of the refrigerator for cubed ice.
2 Open the freezer door and hold down the switch on the door, which "tricks" the freezer into thinking the door is closed, and push the lever or button to dispense ice. The motor behind the ice bin should turn. If it does not, this means the motor is frozen.
3 Remove the motor, following the directions in your refrigerator's manual. Heat and dry out the motor with a hairdryer until the motor turns again, then reinstall the motor according to the manufacturer's directions.
Ice Bin or Chute
1 Remove the ice bin to see if it is overloaded. Ice bins that are too full can cause new ice being produced to back up and cause blockage. If this is the case, dump out the ice and rinse out the ice bin with hot water until any blockage is melted.
2 Examine the separator that divides the ice storage bin from the ice dispenser for holes. If the separator has a hole or is cracked, it must be replaced.
3 Watch the flap on the ice dispenser as you hold down the door switch and simultaneously press the button to dispense ice. If the flap does not close all the way, check for ice blockage and gently remove it. If there is no blockage, the flap will need to be replaced.
Open the door and hold the door switch down and try the ice
dispenser. Do you hear any thing. Take all the ice out of the bin and try.
Anything? Take the bin out and try. Anything? The motor is behind the back
cover where the bin sits. See if you get power to it using a voltmeter. If your
are, probably bad motor. If not dispenser switch.
I lowered the temp on the freezer to 4 overnight, by morning water dispenser is working fine. I think that when we changed the temp to 7 (in order to make more ice ) it froze the water pipe going to the dispenser. I am going to keep both fridge and freezer at 5 ,and hope this will not happen again.
On advice from the tech I removed acess door. It was covered by frozen moisture. I removed the motor it was full of water. I verified 120 volts at plug to motor from control by depressing the door switch and ice dispenser lever at same time. The motor ohms out but because of amount of water removed from it I am going to replace it and see what happens.
