Canon PowerShot SD600 - Problems downloading images - same as below
I also have a new SD600 camera (6 months old) and consistently have trouble downloading images to my DELL PC laptop (windows xp). The problem is connecting to the computer. I downloaded fine at first, since I have continuously tried opening the camera window and unplugging and replugging the usb cable into the computer. It worked once. Now I can't download at all. The computer recognizes the camera is attached (mouse gets the hourglass), but the EOS Utility application doesn't automatically launch. Nothing happends except the hourglass goes away or the camera turns off from being idle. Any attempt have the computer recognize the camera manually gets 2 results (1) creates the "Compter cannot detect camera" error, or (2) nothing happens.
I tried "My Computer" as recommend to no avail. The camera icon is visible but clicking on the download link gets an error that says the camera is being used by another application. The computer in a catch 22. You can't get around the computers attempt to recognize the camera, but none of the applications actually recognize the camera. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Did you download the canon download app or are you using the installed pc generic camera download app? it will make a diference if the computer cannot reconsile which too use. let me know and we can go from there

It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:
Immediate solution is to buy a card reader and use it to download all images via your USB port. I suggest using Picasa3 (free software from Google) for the downloading and organization of your images, but other software works as well. Direct camera to computer download have been a longstanding problem as computers change (e.g. vista) and camera software doesn't.
go to Canon's website and find the most recent version of the software that came with the camera. If that doesn't work then uninstall everything again, verify the device is not in your device manager anywhere then start over but DO NOT plug in the camera until you've upgraded to the most recent software version. Once fully updated plug it in and see what happens, should work.
Could you see your pictures on camera's screen?
Did you changed your computer's operation system?
Try to see your pictures on your computer while using a card reader.
Let me know if you will need for any further assistance.
Hmmm... Yea sometimes the pc doesn't see the added gizmo your camera.
In which case, I suggest when you connect camera to computer click on "my computer" and you should see your device listed there along with your C drive & so on. Click on the camera icon & viola, you can copy the images from there to your computer.
Yea I had the same experience with PS too, well Elements in particular. And there is a setting (somewhere in Elements Browser window) to turn it off.
Yea to simply download images - it doesn't require any software at all with XP.
I use a card reader & rarely deal with using the camera cable to computer hook up. To use that device you'll remove the card from the camera & stick in the reader & its ALWAYS worked for me. Again you'll have to click on "my computer" to find the images there.
Otherwise --- next step would be to try another usb cable.
