If it is making this knocking noise when the compressor shuts off, like a clunk, clunk clunk sound... then you need to clean the coils under you unit. but if you got this after 2006, then it probably only has a 1 year warranty on the compressor. it most likely is a broken spring inside the compressor and cant be replaced without replacing the compressor.
check your warranty papers and see if it has an extended warranty, if not then call amana/ whirlpool as they own amana now, and ask if they will help you with the cost of repairs.
this unit is too new to throw away but if you have to pay for the repairs, then you might be better off replacing the unit.
dont throw it away, as it wont stop cooling but is very annoying when it shuts off. it would be a great second unit in the garage or basement if you cant get it fixed for free.

Sounds like the compressor vibration dampers are wearing out. the dampers are the rubber washers that seperate the compressor from the chassis of the fridge. when they start to deteriorate, and the compressor kicks on, it will bounce against something in the chassis, causing a knocking noise.

The knocking noise is a normal refrigerant noise that occurs when the unit starts up. unfortunatley theres not much you can do to quiet it down,

What is the clunking noise made after the refrigerator stops running? Its a Kenmore and is 10 yrs old. We have thoroughly cleaned behind and beneath the refrigerator and now the noise seems louder.

The clunking noise you hear , is probably when the compressor shuts off , due to temp reached or when it goes into defrost . An internal motor mount spring , inside the compressor , is broken ( rusted and broke ) . The refrig can go on working for years , without any problem , except noisey , when it cuts off . To stop the noise , replaceing the compressor is the only option . I have heard of placeing objects under 1 leg of the compressor , to " re-adjust " the ballance , but thru my experience , another spring broke , causing more knocking .

Water leaks from bottom of refridgerator

Automatic defrost units have a drain for the melt water to leave the cabinet and travel to a pan under it. That drain is sometimes not easy to find and it may be clogged with debris or mold so the runoff can't leave as it should.

Noisy refrigerator

hi doug,
with the amana of that age there are several weird noises, be glad you have only one. that aside
ill tell you all of em...
a clear pop..... usually after defrost its the compressor starting cold as they say.
a knock ( very much like you should answer the door) is the plastic liner popping back into place in the freezer, after defrost.
Then ther is the knock of the water solonoid, but that would be more than once a day.
you might be able to remedy these, by changing the box postion a bit,,, i know sound stupid but i was the old lonely for 15 years and this one was always tough to diagnos it never happened whiles the service guy is there.... so i bought one....

My Amana (bottom freezer) starts knocking every so often.

It could be unequal tightening of the mounting of the compressor. Also check the belt for uneven thickmess...........sodeep

Fridge barely cool freezer not freezing

Get it checked out. It should be good for another 7 years or so. A new fridge will cost $900 to $2000 and the quality of many of the new ones is not so good.

4 year old amana refidge bottom freezer died on me yesterday. Is their a 5 yr waaranty

You would have to look at your original warranty paperwork to be sure but I would doubt it. Most of Amana's refrigerators only come with a one year warranty. Even if it is a five year warranty you will most likely have to show a proof of purchase and pay a service fee for the tech to come out.

Very loud knocking noise that can be felt if touching the unit.

If the heater has a heat sink with a brass non-return valve then this could have a fault creating a hammering noise that resonates through the heater.

Refrigerator knocking noise

the motor could be on the way out. Put your hand (carefully) on the motor (back of the refridgerator), if it is too hot to touch then the motor is burning out and will need to be replaced.
