Ratbag:
Check the following:
1. CD surface. If it has many scratches, should use a CD Fix kit. For it, if you consider that the game is worthy.
2. Clean the laser lens with a CD Lens Cleaner, most of us (and I should apply this also) do not clean frequently the Laser Lens, causing this kind of problems.

If it is a PS2 game disc it should read just fine. If it is not, it wont. If it is new, return it as defective. If a new disc does not work you will need the drive repaced or repaired. Call us for free phone support or a repair. 1-800-479-4620
Even if the game isn't scratched, you should try holding it under a light to see if there are any fingerprints or smudges on the disc. You can try cleaning the disc with a lint-free cloth if you've got one, though I've never had trouble with a cotton t-shirt. Wipe from the center of the disc straight towards the outer edge. Do this for the entire disc and try it again.
If that doesn't work, please update this issue with the error message you're seeing if any. Does the disc show up in the PS2 browser? Do you get a disc read error? Does the screen just go black when you try to play the game?
If your PS2 works fine with most
of the games and won’t play a few..Then you should try this trick to play them
too on your PS2:
Turn on your PS2 without
inserting any disc.
Menu screen will
appear like:
Press the (triangle) Button to enter Version
Information Menu that looks like
Highlight the Play Station
Driver as above and again press (triangle).
New screen will appear like
Highlight the Disc Speed
as above and press X button,to enter Disc Speed Menu
And set it from Standard to
"Fast".
After you set Disc Speed to Fast,Press and HoldReset Button to turn off your console.
Then again Press and Hold Reset
Button till the Blue Light turns on.
Remove the Reset Button and
Press it again.
Be
patient and wait till thegame loads itself. If your lens is in good condition then
it will play game in first go else try again till it PLAY your game. If still
your Grand Turismo 4 DVD wont work then you must clean your PS2 lens.Watch following video to learn about cleaning lens: Thank you and Good Luck!
Sounds like you need to get your money back ..the resurfaceing can also do more bad than good But a little trick lightly rub a crayon over the disk ,,old pantyhose works great rub it off from center out then try your disk ,,have saved many good games that way
it might be a problem in the wiring which would have to be fixed by an expert. also you could tey cleaning the disk tray using a compressed air can. you can find these cans at most place like walmart or electronic stores.
The PS2 Works fine right correct?? If it does and you want to fix the Laser do the following :
Step 1 Turn off the PS2 if on.
Step 2 make the PS2 lie down on its back where the PS2 logo is not seen.
Step 3 Take off the Rubber Squares which are located from all 4 corners and take out the screws using a screw driver.
Step 4 Take off the lid of the PS2 after the screws are taken out.
Step 5 near the light of the PS2 were it shows the Green and blue light is a box where the PS2 disc runs.
Step 6 screw the top of the box and you should see a disc if not taken out and underneath the disc is the lens use alcohol and gently wipe the lens with a Q-Tip after doing so put the lid out of box back on and open the disc drive and put a game in it should work or just get a new PS2 Slim.
