Depending on the volume of information and how often it changes you have several options.

Small amounts of data, USB thumb Drive or CD-R
Larger amounts DVD-R or External USB HDD

There are digital tape backups for very large amounts of data.

If the data being backup up is updated/changed oftern, then a HDD or tape backup is best

It depends on how old your computer is and how big your HD is for small amounts use DVDs and the other way i do it is have a secound hard drive in the computer so if something happens to the system it usually does not effect the second hard drive Another way is to have a large USB portable hard drive I sometimes use this as I take information to another location

If you are going to use a 500 Gb I would not partition it as if something happen to your system it may also effect the other data on the same disk

You need to format your drive as FAT32.
If you are using Windows Vista or 7, you will have to google search for a FAT23 formatting tool. So take your data off the drive. Format the drive, put your files back on the drive and your good to go.
*************CAUTION************
There is a 4GB per file size limitation with FAT32!

SMART is the system that monitors the health of a hard disk, in your case  it's close to complete failure. Follow immediately what that warning message says - copy all your data to some DVD's, replace the hd and reinstall.

Data not copy other hardisk

Maybe your secondary hard drive is write protected due to third party software during the old installation of the system such as norton data recovery.

Hope this will be helpful to you.
