Sounds like the little rubber band that drives the pinch roller has broken and/or jumped off its pulleys. Simple fix, but you will have to take it out and take the upper cover off to get to it.
l would have a look inside to see if when a tape is inserted it loads and will ff and rew, if the transport that moves the tape has failed it will account for what is happening.
You will need to check the swith that change from Tape to CD to other functions. If the switch is good. Then the next thing is to check for tape function. Can you try to fast forward, reverse. If these functions are working properly then the pinch roller ( the little wheel that is pulling the tape need to be replaced). If nothing moves then you need to replace the belt and the wheel and possible the motor at the same time
Unit may have worn belts that are slipping. All cassette player belts are subject to deterioration even if recently installed. You may try ordering the belts yourself and have a service tech install them. The tech that installed belts 9 months ago may have used used belts. Although dishonest, it is common.
common fault on the JVC tape decks is the belt stretch and then it does a clicking sound its trying to pick up the audio heads. changing the belt is quite hard if you have`nt done it before.
