I have had an inspiron 1150 since new and now all of a sudden it wont read or play dvds, I was told that these lock on a certain region code after changing four times it stays on the last one. How do i go about fixing this so we can return to normal on the laptop.
The Region code changes are written to firmware of the drive, so if it is changed 5 times is locks on the last setting. If you cannot browse a DVD in my computer.windows explorer, then region code isn't the problem. The DVD optics are.
If you can browse a DVD but not play it, there are tools advertised on the internet to reset the firmware (I have never tried one, so I can't recommend one)
If you cannot browse a DVD, then replace the drive
Does the dvd need cleaned
have you tried devices to update driver
have you right clicked on the drive and properties to see if any settings were changed

Disconnect the battery, unplug it, then open it up. There should be a small round battery called the CMOS battery somewhere in there. Pull that out. Then plug your computer in and boot it up without the CMOS battery. It should say password disabled. Turn it off, disconnect it, put it back together, and you're good to go.
The Cd player my be dirty, you can get disks you put in there to clean them. Also sometimes the players are just picky and don't like certain CD's..... I'll build brand new PC's that only read some CD right from the start.
Make sure your disks are clean to, with no fingerprints.
