Thank you so much Helpinghand. I was using another SIM card. Once I replaced it to the iphone's SIM it worked like a charm.
    Thank You.

I have a new iphone that is showing "Voicemail Unavailable" unable to initiate connection. I am using the SIM card that came with the phone and have received some voicemail but not as of the past couple of days. Any suggestions?
    thanks

whenever I select the voicemail icon I get the message "unable to initiate connection". I have used the voicemail feature in the past but it does not seem to work anymore. I know messages have been left since this problem started but they are not appearing on the visual voicemail either.

I am using the SIM card that came with my iphone, so I don't think that's necessarily the solution. I'm having the same "can't initiate access to voicemail" message. I can see my messages on visual voicemail, but can't get any of them to actually play. I'd love any tips people have! Turning the phone on and off to reset doesn't seem to make any difference. The phone says to try again later, but it's been stuck like this for the past 3-4 days. I've been able to access a few messages at random points during that time when the stars were lined up just right, I guess. But other than that, it hasn't worked.

Is there a fix for this problem?

  • Anonymous Sep 25, 2008

Suddenly my voicmail on my iphone doesn't work and I see the message "Voicemail Unavailable Unable to initiate connection" How can I fix this problem?

  • frenchkelly Apr 21, 2009

I only receive sms's randomly and I do not receive the replies to my sms's. Seems that there are certain numbers that do this but hard to really understand the problem as erratic. I have already changed my old sim for a new one 2 days ago and restored my phone an hour ago, still not working. I really do not know what to do as I rely on sms as a lot of my clients are overseas. I am in france...

Pls read this solution COMPLETELY "BEFORE" making attempt to fix the VVM.

If you have jailbreak or download a new profile or via MobileConfigs for internet tethering, there is a good chance the VVM will break also.

2 possibilities of faults:

1. Carrier

Call your carrier, tell them you are having issue with the VVM (iPhone virtual voice mail), try to convince the carrier that the problem is with the provision database, which contains your VVM profile records somehow are corrupted and needs to be "removed" and "re-provisioned" or "re-created". This is a quick fix by level one support person to do within his power for the first attempt to fix your VVM with the pre-condition that you have not mess around with jailbreak and other hacking activities.

2. Apple

If the above carrier method fix did not work, most likely you need to head back to the Apple store to have a Apple tech to help you. If you go back to the carrier store, most likely, they will tell you it is a "known" problem for the iPhone. In any event, you have a better chance with a face to face time with Apple then the carrier folks, unless, you have a "real friend" in the carrier store.

Before you head to the Apple store and if you think you are savvy enough, you should have already tried to reset the iPhone in a number of ways:

a. iPhone --> Settings --> General --> Network --> Reset Network Settings

b. factory reset

c. reload current firmware version

d. change and re-initiate voice mail password using (http://www.wireless.att.com/support/knowledgeBase.do?content=KB81229.html)

4. Last Resort

a. goto your itune store on the iphone, search for "youmail" app to download and try, it is free.

b. exchange your iPhone with new iPhone from where you bought it from.

Go into settings - general - reset and then resetting network settings. This should restart your iPhone.

This alone didn't work, but dialling 1760 to switch off voicemail then 1750 to switch it on again. This works!

Are you using the SIM card that came with the phone or did you use one from another phone. Generally, the first 2 problems are associated with that or an SIM card that doesn't know isn't associated with iPhone. There are plans to allow you to use iTunes songs as ring tones in a future version of iTunes.

How/where do you dial 1760 and 1750. In the keypad my phone thinks I am making a call, and gives me a "please ang-up message

Reset the voicemail password

Contact your wireless carrier to learn how to reset or change your voicemail password on iPhone.
If you don't remember your voicemail password or need to change it, contact your wireless carrier for assistance.
If your wireless carrier offers Visual Voicemail, you can change your voicemail password directly from your iPhone: Tap Settings > Phone > Change Voicemail Password.
you have at&t following below steps:
To reset your voicemail password over the phone by calling AT&T's automated system:
  • Call 800.331.0500 from any phone or 611 from your AT&T wireless phone.
  • Press the option for Voicemail Help, and then follow the prompts to reset your password.

Why does my apple iphone 5c say "visual voicemail is currently unavailable?

It is probably because your carrier doesn't support visual voicemail.
Check with your provider if they do, and if they do ask them to activate it on your account, be warned some providers may charge you for this service.

My voicemail deleted itself automatically after 14 days. I don't have visual voicemail. I did not know this and wanted to save a very important message. Is there any way to retreive it?

Even if you don't delete a message, according to AT&T's voicemail usage page, messages stay around for either 14 or 21 days, rather than indefinitely
Voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone from AT&T servers and after being deleted from the iPhone are no longer available on the server.
Unfortunately,AT&T says that once it's gone, it's gone :(
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Iphone visual voicemail

it took 2 weeks for AT&T to figure this out. Essentially, you have to be on the Edge network for the Visual Voicemail to work. I was on wi-fi, and was therefore the VM was not working. The easy fix for me: press and hold the home button (round button at bottom) and the power button simultaneously. then slide the bar over that appears on the screen. this will get you back on the Edge network, and problem solved. you will know you are on the Edge when the "E" appears at the top near your service bars. hope this solves your problem.
