The laptop would only give me three goes to lock the dvd region code, problem was it would not except anything other than region/zone code 1. I can't use the dvd to watch any dvd's as I live in a zone/region 4, so all my dvd's are this zone. Yes I could buy region 1 dvd's but then I can only watch them on the laptop. I have been told you can flash the hard drive? but when researching this find out you can bugger your hard drive if you dont do it right or have the right flash?,
Have looked at sites to do this but none seems to work, downloaded some dvd region free program, but that didnt work either, (Or I didnt fiqure it out right). Apart from spending a fortune on paying someone to fix this, are there any other ways?? The laptop dvd is three years old now, and have put up with it for this long, but thought their might be someone out there who knows what to do about this problem.Yes I could trade it and upgrade but money issues are the problem, yes i could sell it but who going to buy old laptop with faulty dvd player, and I kinda like my laptop.
Thank you for your assistance, sorry it took me longer to reply, my friend needed to use my laptop, till hers was fixed, so only got it back today, tryed your fix, but it says "you can change your region a limited number of times, when reaches zero you cannot change region even if you reinstall or move your dvd to different computer". This is where the problem was, as it stuck on region 1 with 0 changes remaining....any other ideas :-)Thank you for your assistance, sorry it took me longer to reply, my friend needed to use my laptop, till hers was fixed, so only got it back today, tryed your fix, but it says "you can change your region a limited number of times, when reaches zero you cannot change region even if you reinstall or move your dvd to different computer".

There is software out there that can allow you to not be restricted to region codes. I use AnyDVD. It seems to do the trick without have to mess with your 5 chances to change regions.

Krugs,
If you are using Windows you can easily change it if you have administrator privileges on you laptop. In Windows XP SP 2 (may be the same for other versions but I can?t test to make sure):
- Click on Start, Settings then Control Panel.
- Find the System icon and open it by double left clicking.
- Open the hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button.
- In the device manager list that appears look for the item labeled ?DVD/CD-ROM drives. Expand the section by left clicking on the ?+? symbol just to the left of ?DVD/CD-ROM? icon.
- You should see an object below that that has the name of your drives manufacturer. If you just have the one optical drive on your laptop it should be the only object there. Using the mouse right click on that object and select ?Properties? from the selection that appears.
- In the Properties box that appears click on the DVD Region tab.
- At the bottom of that section you will see a scroll box listing countries in alphabetical order. Find the country you live in (or want to pretend you?re in) and highlight it by left clicking on it once.
- Click on the OK button.
- Close all the windows and test.
Good luck and don?t forget to let us know how it goes.
Oh, you?ve already exceeded your 5 changes. That is the way it is without messing with the DVD drives firmware which will void your warranty. The motion picture industry (which includes the artists) don?t want you playing DVDs from other regions so they have forced the drive manufacturers to limit the drives in that way. You get five changes, then its locked in. There are hacks around that you can use to change or reset your specific but that?s another story.Oh, you?ve already exceeded your 5 changes. Re: Dvd stuck on zone 1 when i am a zone 4
There is a firmware crack that can reset the changes for the region code changes. I will not tell you anymore about the crack other than 1 is availiable as my understanding is it is illegal in most countries.
I will say though when or if you find it set the region code to zero as region code zero will play any other region.
Purchase new drive for laptop, however these are 2/3 times price of pc one, or you could use an external drive(DVD) probably the same price and can be used in conjunction with all pc/laptops.

probably you are trying to play a disc that is not zone free or you need a code for your player to make it zone free. you may be playing a zone 2 disc ( PAL) on a machine that only takes zone 1 (NTSC) or vica-versa.
This question is one of my most frequent on FixYa.
There is no "region-free" or "region 0" setting for any DVD player/recorder. Only DVD media can be region free. Every single offer to set a player or recorder to region free that I am familiar with has been a scam. The reason for this is to prevent DVD piracy.
Most DVD players and recorders (SONY included) have provisions for making a maximum of THREE changes to their region code. A fourth attempt at changing the region code will result in the player/recorder being turned into a paperweight.
Bkhopkins- in your case, you will be able to change your region code from region 1 (USA) to region 4 (AUS). Doing so will leave your player with 2 more changes, maximum. Check your manual for the procedure and the exact number of changes you are allowed. Please be aware that after you change to Region 4, any Region 1 DVD's will not be viewable unless you switch back, which will use another of your three changes.
You have an alternative to salvage your DVD's by downloading a program called DVD Shrink. This program is capable of removing the region code from your DVDs and saving them as region-free at the sacrifice of some quality. You will at least the be able to view your US DVD's without sacrificing a region code change on your player.
I came across a web site called DVDRhelp.com which tells how to reset the region codes for software DVD players. http://www.dvdrhelp.com/play
" Q: How do I make my DVD drive region free (remove region codes/country codes/zone locks)?
A: Use DVD Region-Free to make your region locked DVD drive and your software player region free. You can also 'patch' your DVD drives firmware, you can also try a patched DVD drive firmware (it is freeware, but may be a bit tricky and 'dangerous'). http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm http://forum.firmware-flash.com/dl_all.php
Q: How do I make WinDVD,PowerDVD,Win2k region free?
A: Use DVD Region-Free to make your software player region free. Or use DVD Genie (freeware) to make your software DVD Player region free. http://www.inmatrix.com/files/dvdgenie_download.html "
Side note: firmware is "miniature" software which runs an electronic device. Some electronic devices have updatable firmware that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site and re-programmed into the device. This is referred to as flashing the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) or EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory). A word of warning: if a firmware upgrade is interrupted due to a power outage or computer freezeup, the device may cease to function.
it could be a region problem. most dvd players are locked on certain region areas..like America being Zone 1 and S.A being Zone 2. imported or diffirent format of dvd's usualy gives a disk error message. if you think it might be region try www.videohelp.com. they give hacks for region problems^^
You can only change the region code 4 times and on the fourth time it locks on that region and you cannot change it again.
You can upgrade the firmware on your DVD drive to make it region free (if available for your model DVD), but if you install or make a mistake then your DVD drive will be a piece of junk.
The best solution is to run a piece of software that defeats the region code. I use DVD Region Free from www.dvdidle.com, it cost a few dollars and you get free updates forever, I also use their DVD copy program DVD FAB Gold, great software also free upgrades forever.
The region code can only be changed 4 times and it locks on the 4th change. There may be a firmware upgrade that make your DVD region free, but if you make a mistake or install the wrong firmware upgrade then the DVD will be a piece of junk. You will need to Google search for DVD firmware upgrades for your model DVD. The best way to view DVDs from other regions is to install a piece of software that defeats the region code. I use a program called DVD-RegionFree from www.dvdidle.com There are possibly other programs available, again Google search for them.
This could be a firmware issue or glitch. Follow the link bellow for a list of all the drivers for your machine. Download and run/install the firmware for you particular DVD drive, and you might also do the bios as well. Be sure to save the download to the desktop, and close out the internet before running/installing. This will ensure a clean install. If this doesn't clear it up, then it mat be a faultyreader board inside the DVD drive.
MMM impossible to unlock Yes it is inside your own time and mind set thats true for you !Anyway Region zoning does not protect copyright.!Newzealand is A Region Free regional code Free
