New battery originally charged, but now is at 0% and won't charge. I got a Targus universal ac. Is this the problem?

It is either the adapter or the connections to the motherboard. It would definitely feel better about telling you which one it is if you could try another adapter. Last thing i can say for now at least is have your ac adapter checked and make sure it is putting out the required power.

Dell m5110 laptop won't charge new battery and ac adapter is not recognized in bios

Try another AC cord/charger with the EXACT same specs as original. Is the battery a genuine Dell battery, if not return it? Some aftermarket laptop batteries don't play well with your computer, the pin-out connections aren't correct and MAY be a fire hazard.

AC power adapter wattage cannot be determined

The AC adapter needs to be replaced. You can buy one from Dell for about 100-200 dollars. If your laptop is still under warranty, the charger is often covered under the same warranty as the laptop and should be replaced under warranty if applicable. You may also buy a third-party charger off of ebay or amazon much cheaper, but this is not recommended. If you do consider a third party charger, make sure that it has the same wattage, voltage, everything! Good luck!

the problem is the BIOS of the Dell system is looking for an ID signal from the AC adapter so it knows what adapter is connected. If the BIOS cannot ID the power supply, then battery charger is disabled.

You will need to get a Dell AC adapter.

On the long term, a power adapter with a bigger amperage can damage battery and battery charger.

Better to get an adapter with same specs as the 65/70W one , or an original replacemant:

Targus ac70u adapter; 0% available, ( plugged in, not charging )

How old is your laptop? It may just be that you need a new battery if it won't hold a charge.

Further, this charger worked previously on this laptop and with this battery? If so, you definitely might be ready for a new battery.

Dell Inspiron 1501 AC Adapter error message

The Dell 1501 ac adapter (possibly other Dell’s as well) has been known to be problematic because of its lack of a plug to jack secure fit. You will notice that the plug can all too easily be pulled from the jack, as opposed to other systems where the plug fits more securely onto the jack. The plug and jack combination is poorly designed so that over time, the plug will come unseated depending on how much movement the machine is subjected to. This will result in power error messages or outright power-up failure. So before assuming you have a faulty adapter, make sure that it is not just a loose plug that is causing the problem. If you look inside the jack, you will notice that there is a 3mm region of non-conductive material nearest the surface of the jack. Use a strip of standard electrical tape 3mm wide and long enough and wrap it around the base of the plug (you may need more than one layer of tape to get a good fit). I have used this method to secure my plug and it has served me well. If the tape comes undone over time, just simply replace it. A more “elegant” method would be to use an “O” ring of the appropriate size (about 6mm) around the base of the plug in lieu of the tape.

No power

Try purchasing an original adapter. I've had several machine of different make through my shop that the Targus adapter just simply won't run. For example, a Dell Inspiron 1100 and HP dv4000 won't run at all, and a Dell Latitude 1501 and Gateway crv503 will run but won't charge the battery. Targus adapters are junk, if you can, get your money back.

Power issue

Is the new power supply a Dell. Some aftermarket power supplies, especially Targus, will not charge the battery in a Dell. If it is a Dell supply, then it's one of two things. 1- the battery is shot and needs replacing. 2- the power management chip on the motherboard is shot and the motherboard needs replacing. If the battery light is flashing orange then the battery is shot. If the battery light is green, then go into the power settings and see if the machine shows that it is charging. If it doesn't show that it's charging then it's the pm chip.
