Hi there, I have the LG GSA-2166D External DVD RW drive, and for the last few months I've been having real trouble getting it to recognise any blank CD-R media I've been putting in the drive, and certain CDs from my music collection. For example my Infiniti 80min/730MB 48x CD-R media are not recognised. The music CD "Joe Satriani: Live in San Francisco" discs 1 and 2 are not recognised. As the drive is USB, there are no IDE controllers to uninstall, I have tried the drive on multiple machines (all running Win XP SP2) and the problem still remains. As for the music CDs, they are not scratched or broken as they work on other CD drives and hi-fi systems.
Try and see if you can pull a directory using explorer,, sometimes if you record to the full 80 minutes capacity, the disc will return an error,,,even if you recorded it on that drive...also i know this may sound strange but on the drive tray itself take the mount where the laser is mounted and extend it out to the furthest travel point ,,,gently,,,do not force...load the disc, and see if it is now recognized,,,sometimes it is a timing issue, and this way the tray/laser recalibrates itself....

I can't test whether I can "pull" a directory as I cannot record to the disc for the simple reason that I cannot record any discs as it will not recognise the blanks.
Secondly this is not a laptop drive so I cannot move the laser mounting. It is just like a normal drive in a desktop PC except that it is external and connects via USB2.0
