My uncle from New Jersey has sent me an iPhone he bought on launch day as a surprise for my birthday. Unfortunately I found out that it will not work in Canada is it true? Is there a way to unlock it? Please help... I don't want to return it...

Your iPhone can be used in Canada, it just needs to be activated in the US with a US phone number. Rogers is actively working with Apple to launch the iPhone in Canada as soon as possible and will be the exclusive provider of the iPhone in Canada.

There is no legit way to unlock it or use it in Canada, though you may be able to use it as an iPod...but Apple gave AT&T a five year exclusive for service in the States...I am sure they are working on a Canadian model, though.
