Question about Epson TM-L90

1 Answer

Printer problems... Hi, I purchased a 2nd hand Epson TM-L90 printer and I'm having some problems with it, I've also just purchased the correct serial and power lead and was supplied drivers for the printer. After installing the Epson Advanced Printer Driver and printer doesn't printer on command, infact it only prints loads and loads of pages of ???????????? this only happens when I restart my PC, very weird. The printer is connected to my PC from serial to serial ports (25 pin) I have also tried to change the setting from different ports but still without any luck. Tried to testout the 'Print Test Page' in CP under printers but yet again nothing happens, not even ???? Does anyone know anything I maybe doing wrong? Any help or helpful advice would be most appreiated. Pete

    Thanks for the response.

    I have a new problem now, everytime I turn on the printer it prints out continuious pages of ?????????? and it doesn't stop.

    I have tried turning the power supply off and taking out the serial port to the PC, and even uninstalling all the drivers/software.

    Is there another way of reseting this printer?

It sounds as if the port is trying to operate a mouse - giving the ???????. If you have windows XP then go to control panel, printers and faxes, then click "add a printer". The add printer wizard starts up, click next. select the "local printer" option and make sure the "automatically detect and install....etc" option is turned off. Click next and you should be able to select printer port. If you are using the serial port COM 1 (usually the only one externally on the pc), then select it from the list and follow the wizard through to the end. Restart the PC and you should hopefully find that the port has become dedicated to the printer alone. if still problems, go to device manager, right click on the COM 1 port and select properties, it should allow you to start the troubleshooter for the port. This should help. Other operating systems will have a similar procedure. Also worth trying is to uninstall the epson drivers, restart, plug the printer in and turn it on, and see if windows will automatically install the printer without the epson drivers. If it will, then let it do it's stuff and hopefully it will work. Hope this helps :)

    Have been looking through the manual (sorry no link to it - you have to register with epson as a service contractor to get it). There is no reset as such, but there is a list of DIP switch positions;

    switch 1-1
    Power switch function
    Interface condition selection
    on=by DIP switch
    off=by memory switch
    Data word length
    on=7 bits
    off=8 bits
    Parity check
    Parity selection
    1-7 and
    1-8 (in order)
    Transmission speed
    on/on=2400bits per second
    switch 2-1
    Fixed to Off.

    If 1-2 to 1-8 are all set to off, then the printer is set up for parallel printing which could conceivably be the problem.

    Try one at a time in a different position and see what you get. It is slightly unclear on the location of these DIP switches, but i believe you get to them through the base - just pull the end with the cable holes away from the printer and it should snap out (probably worth checking in the top first in case they are obvious)

    If you need more help with this then please ask again - I will keep hold of the manual until i hear back from you, there is little else of much use in it, and nothing that sheds any other light on the problem - I think the DIP settings should help, just make sure you write down what they are set at before changing anything.

    Hope this helps :)

Are you using a third party USB adapter or a USB interface? On the self test page that you printed does it say USB connection or something that will say about USB? or does it say parallel or serial connection? try to check the dip switches setting if its configured properly. visit site for more info.

Epson TM 88II not working with Win XP SP2

Are you confident this is using a parallel interface?

The ones I used to work with used a 25pin to 9pin serial connection. The 25 pin connection on the printer is the same as a parrallel port on a PC, but if you think of a normal parallel lead the printer should use a 'centronics' connector to conform to this. I think you may need a 25pin to 9pin serial lead which aren't very common but plenty of people should still make them.

Did you change the dip switches? I believe that for the serial printer to work with ethernet, you need to have switches 2 and 4 on bank 2 set to on.

DIP switch positions

Found them finally Pete - this is the service manual for the printer; Check page 45 of the pdf (page2-21 of the manual) for the location of the switches, the next 2 pages for the settings a bit clearer than on my previous post. also probably worth a read through the rest, in case there are some other possible solutions - I couldn't find one but you might see something that sounds familiar. Hope this helps, still trying to find a user manual direct link, will post it if i find one :)
