The freezer repeatedly gets hard frost behind the back panel of the compartment. Eventually it stops making ice, and ice cubes in the tray dry up. Twice now I have shut off the freezer and defrosted it for several hours using a heater. That does the trick, and it goes back to normal, including making ice. But only for about a week, Then I notice a repeat of the problem starting---that is, clogging of the back panel and vents with ice. What's wrong? Have any solutions? Seems like the defroster gets clogged, since the ice cubes are wetter than they should be too.

Your refrigerator appears to have a defrost problem. There are three parts tothe defrost system that may be causing the problem. The defrost timer located inside the controls panel just above the top shelf of the fresh food compartment. The defrost timer is seen as item 12 in this photo=> MBB1956GEQ_Controls
Lets try to force defrost by turning the defrost time slowly clockwise until the compressor and fans stop. Leave the defrost timer like this up to 35 minutes and if the compressor and fans do not come back on automatically then the problem is the=> 67001036 Defrost Timer
If the defrost timer functions properly and still the refrigerator does not go into defrost we will need to move to the defrost heater=> 67002135 Defrost Heater Assembly
and the defrost thermostat=> 12001937 Defrost Thermostat
The defrost timer and defrost heater are found inside the back wall of the freezer and the defrost heater can be tested by the instructions found on the same page as the 67002135 Defrost Heater Assembly

probably the easiest fix for this is install a drain probe to transfer heat from the defrost heater into the drain hole to prevent ice build up. take a peice of 10 or 12 guage solid copper wire and wrap one end around the defrost heater pretty tight and put the other end down in the drain line 2-4 inches.

the frosting of the back compartment of the freezer indicates that the ice builds up at the evaporator ( the coil that cools). the system is supposed to melt the ice after a particular time interval for a period of time in order to start another cycle. im not sure if that model uses the electronic timer which you can not manually adjust to see if it is heating up on the heating mode. you would have to check three things. one is the defrost heater itself if it has continuity. another is the thing that we called thermodisc . its a part of the heating circuit where it cuts the heating current after it senses that the temperature of the evaporator is way up the thaw temperature. it is normally connected in series with the defrost heater and it is attached to the latter part of the evaporator tube. lastly which as i have told you is the timer. if its a mechanical timer, then probably it is not going to the heating mode. another is the electronic timer which is very hard to trouble shoot. you have to really observe the refrigerator how long it is running and if the compressor is stopping and the heater working by looking at the back if water is draining after a few minutes the compressor stop. as i may add, as you have said it is winter there, a thermostat setting could be an issue. the heater could probably not cope up with the coldness of the ambient temperature in which i may suggest to put the thermostat setting to the lowest setting on the knob. i hoped i was able to help....drcool

You can access the drain tube from the back of the refrigerator. There is normally a trap located after the drain line exits the freezer compartment. Clean out the trap and it may solve your problem.

Mate prehaps the defrost element could be burntout thus no auto defrost and the big freeze and the alarm, when you switch off the defrost starts and the alarm resets?

Do you know for certain that the automatic defrost cycle is running at all?
Depending on the model, it should be entering the defrost mode every 12 or 24 hours.
If the defrost timer is not easy to see (because of the drawer construction), you should be able to catch it by checking the walls of the freezer at random to see if they are still 'ice' cold or more temperate.
You may definitely have a leak, no argument there, but the defrost cycle may have been masking it while it was still happening by sending the ice/water down to the pan.
