No image in lcd or viewfinder... sound is recorded but msg 'cover not open' flashes during record and no image is recorded
when cover is closed msg 'cover not open' is present, not flashing
there has been no trauma to the camcorder
hve tried tapping the lens to open stuck iris (?) but nothing...
is this one of those defective ccd that sony will fix w/o charge? or something more nefarious?

It could be either aperture is stuck or ccd imager chip is defective in your camcorder that will be replaced. In bright light, look into camera lens, turn ON in camera mode and observe does aperture open like an eye? If you notice some thing opens right in center of camcorder lens then aperture is working and ccd imager chip is bad that will be replaced. Let me know model number of your Sony camcorder to provide you ccd imager part number info. Thanks.
If camcorder shows old recorded tapes picture with correct colors in LCD but does not show live view in camera mode to record new movie then its ccd imager chip failure.
And if camcoder shows live view and old recorded tapes in its eye piece view finder but does not show any thing in LCD the its problem of broekn/ cracked flexible wire between lcd board and main board of camcorder.
Let me know your finding with bit detail to provide you solution/ helpful info.
Try the following link if no picture or a black screen appears in the
viewfinder or LCD when attempting to record.

first check the iris of the camera if it is
opening, you will see this when you look inside the lens of the camera
when you turn on and off the switch at camera mode if the iris is
opening....if the iris is ok the second problem may occurs of your
camera is the ccd image sensor....go to a sony service center for
replacing that...i know it is free for replacing that sensor cause that
is the recall product not only on sony but in other brand because the
manufacturer of their sensor is only one company....
there are two possible problem of your camera...one check the iris of the camera if it is opening, you will see it went you look inside the lens when you turn on camera mode....and if you see that the iris is opening...the second may be the ccd image sensor......if that is the problem you have no choice but to go the sony service for replacing the ccd image sensor...
