Here are the steps from Whistler's FAQ page on their website:
When the display shows an "R1" type error on the display or the unit clicks (flashing either the Green power LED or the Yellow city LED), it means that the link between the inside and outside unit has failed. Generally this is caused by the receiver's (outside unit) cable becoming unplugged from behind the console (inside unit). NOTE: The receiver cable is the straight one plugged into the "Radar 1" jack. The laser receiver (LRM-5) cable is angled and plugged into the "Laser" jack. This error will also occur if these two cables are reversed.
Follow the below steps to correct R1/Clicking error message:
Make sure the correct cable is connected to the correct jack and that it is fully engaged. Make sure there is sufficient slack in the cables to prevent them from "walking out" of the jacks.
If the above suggestions does not cure the problem, email our Customer Service dept for more information.
Follow the below steps to correct R2/Clicking (Not available on Pro-3450) with "R" Yellow LED flashing error message:
Make sure the correct cable is connected to the correct jack and that it is fully engaged. Make sure there is sufficient slack in the cables to prevent them from "walking out" of the jacks.
If the rear antenna was not installed, go to the Factory Reset procedure. If a rear antenna was installed, continue to the next step.

I've run into the same issue. Have you got it solved yet? In such case, could you please share the solution here? I've tried to enter service mode but with no luck. Regards,Matt
Error 3.CD error message. The pick-up is out of focus during play mode due to scratches on the disc or contamination.
This can be a disc format error (try a previously known working disc) Or the laser may be out of alignment. - in this case professional repair/cleaning/alignment is recommended.

The loading mechanism is out of timing and needs to be rebuilt. This is a fairly strightforward procedure if you have the manual as there is a sequence and alignment procedure for this. No parts are required in most cases. This unit should go to a service station. If you attempt this and are not aligned correctly, it is possible to damage the optics assembly.
The laser may be lacking intensity, there may be a fault in the mechanical mechanism that the laser is riding on, and or there may be a defect in the electronics that runs the tracking alignment parameters for the laser unit.
To properly analyse these players requires some extensive instruntation, the service manual including the alignment procedure, and someone who is experienced at performing the procedure.
In reality, it does not pay to service these DVD players unless it is a very expensive unit. In this case it would be best to send the unit out for factory service.
Based on your post/description, there is an alignment problem with your disc tray. The unit has to be opened up and checked for mechanical problems. It is possible that some foreign material is preventing full closure of the tray. It is also possible that lubrication in some areas have caked up and rather than provide ease of mechanical action actually prevents its.
Alternately, the laser lens/eye could also be dirty. This could be corrected with the use of a CD cleaner readily available from most computer/audio shops/stores.
Additionally, a can of compressed air can be of big help in cleaning dust and small particles from the crannies and nooks of the mechanism/assembly.
If your concern has not been corrected after completion of the above procedures, you may need to seek the services of a qualified professional.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Most DVD players that would display such a message even with a known good disc inside signifies that the that the laser eye/lens is not reading the disc. This could probably be attributed to: 1. dirty, damaged, inverted, blank, un-finalized burned CDs or DVDs; 2. defective, weak burned-out laser eye/lens; 3. defective slider shafting (where the laser eye's carriage moves.
A few things you can try: 1. Use a CD cleaner (readily available from most computer shops); 2. use a can of compressed air and blow through the inside of the loaded disc area; 3. gently tap on the top cover where you estimate the reading/laser eye/lens would be; 4. gently press on the tray door once the disc is loaded.
Should
this not be corrective, perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional such as those in a Service Center. Alternately, your friendly neighborhood electronic shop should do just fine.

If it play cd's but not not dvd's or navi disc then your laser is "tired" or out of alignment. If it does not play any type of disc then it needs a new laser pick unit. A capable tech should be able to re-align or replace the laser pick up unit for about $75 to $150. Contact me if you need it perfome. My number is 801-414-4566.
