A Laser Lens malfunction will cause this to happen and is a common problem. This can be fixed at home if a new Laser Lens or Laser Lens w/ transport can be found for your unit. I used ebay to purchase a new Laser Lens for my Denon DVD 5900. The part is also sometimes available from parts stores like Parts Express for a premium, $100+ Parts Express vs $17 ebay in my case. I would recommend purchasing a FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL from an online vendor. The manual will cost between $10 - $20 and is downloadable. The installation is very straight forward. The part that might not be clear would be the grounding shorts on the new Laser Lens. THE NEW LENS COMES SHORTED AND AFTER THE PART IS INSTALLED IN THE PLAYER THE GROUND SHORTS MUST BE UNSOLDERD FOR IT TO WORK CORECTLY. The part comes this way to protect the Laser from static shock damage.
The repair on a Denon DVD 5900 cost $30 and took about an hour to complete.

Wrong.. not true 95% of the time there is another error.. keep looking and discover the problem. It is most likely a simple cleaning or belt issue. Neither of which is something you could not do

Does not spin dvd

Sometimes the brushless motor driver circuit fails. Rarely does the motor itself go bad. On some models, if the the laser diode is too weak to read the disc, the player will not bother to spin it. It won't spin so a lens cleaner disc won't work You can try to take it apart and clean the tiny lens. Don't use alcohol. Windex and a Q-tip works great to remove grease and dirt. Don't buff it hard. Just wipe lightly a few times and look at it at an angle to make sure it is shiny, not hazy. Almost all of these are not an economically viable repair. If cleaning the lens does not help, you are looking at another portable player.

When a disc is inserted it spins about 3 revolutions & stops then the message says "NO DISC". So appears to not read or see the disc.

Hi Robert,
First of all, thank you for posting your question here at Fixya. You may try the steps below to resolve the issue.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. -Sometimes because of dust and any fine foreign objects the optical lens can'tread any disc. If you have a CD Lens cleaner, play it to the unit. If this isnot available you may manually clean the optical lens. Open the cover andgently clean the eye of the lens by smooth, clean, soft cotton buds. Be carefulwhile doing this, just a gentle stroke only.
2.Check the ribbon - Checkthe ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has anopen line then of course the lens can't read the disc, this is because of themovement of the optical lens back-and-forth. Also try to erase the contact by pencileraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then thenext step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and readingthe ohmmeter.
3.Check the spindle motor -Check the spindle motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test itusing the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and itwill spin. Bad motor-reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin or spin slowly.
HopeI helped you.
Have a nice day!

Won't read d d keeps saying bad disk

Hello, welcome to Fixya!

Was this player playing previously? And how long have you been using this player? I suspect the lens of the player. Once the lens of the player becomes weak, it won't play discs any longer.

The first thing my mind goes to, is the lens. The lens id responsible for reading/loading data on discs. So if the lens is unable to read the disc, there is no way the player is going to play the disc.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the player and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or probably, a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the player's cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new one.

To replace the lens, remove the bad laser, use it as a sample to get exactly the same type and do the replacement. Note that replacing a laser (lens) needs a professional touch, so if you cannot replace the laser, get it to a repairman to fix it for you.

Once this us done, your player will play all DVD discs again.

Good luck.

Dvd won't play my dvd's. keep saying no disc or wrong disc. what is the problem

  • Hi, Sounds like the lens is just really dirty. Go buy a leans cleaner disk and run it through the DVD player two or three times to get the lens good and clean. Repeat about once a month to keep the lens clean and running properly. Sometimes you need to run it through 3 or 4 times to get the lens to read again.

  • These disks I speak of have little bristles on it that "sweep" the lens clean. I use them on all my disk players and they work real well.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi kjones1021,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.

Hint : Most of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Also, check if your unit is under warranty period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Don't attempt to open the cover(it will void the warranty).

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!

Hi Danny.
this could be a couple off things wrong here.
1,could be a faulty dvd player.
2,could do with having a lens cleaning disc put through it.
3,could be a faulty lens reader.
if i was you before i do anything big to it i would run a lens cleaning disc through it and see if it cleans the lens that reads the discs.
if this does not work i would take it back,or get someone to have a look at it for you.
