When I plug my Sandisk into my computer it says "A problem occured during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly." So I followed the computers instructions and went to Add Hardware tried to do it manually and it says "the device cannot start code 10".I uninstalled the "usb mass storage device" and restarted the computer and then plugged it back in and it said the same thing. My Sandisk worked a week ago but now it started giving me trouble. It cant be the Sandisk because it works in most other computers. Why wont it work in mine? my computers a Dell if that makes a difference. Whatever, I hope its fixable.
I had the same problem. I solved it by following these steps:
1. Unplug USB cable from computer
2. Press "MENU" on sansa device
3. Go to "Settings", then go to "USB" on sansa menu
4. Select "MSC," by pressing white circular button
5. Press "MENU" to exit the menu
6. Plug USB cable into computer
According to Sansa instruction manual, selecting the MSC option does this: "Use mass storage class mode (can be useful for older computers)."
MAKE SURE YOUR SANDISK IS PROPERLY CONNECTED TO YOUR COMPUTER THEN-GO TO YOUR START MENU-CLICK ON CONTROL PANEL-THEN CLICK ON SOUND SPEECH AND AUDIO DEVICES ON THE BOTTOM CLICK ON PORTABLE MEDIA DEVICES AND FOLLOW THE STEPS YOU COMPUTER GIVES YOU. GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE I WAS ANY HELP TO YOU.

Most likely why that isn't working correctly is because your usb port on your computer is most likely bad... I know someone who had the same problem and once she plugged the player into another usb port it worked like a charm.
Right click on My Computer, Choose Properties from the drop down list, then click on Device Manager.
Down the list, there will be Universal Serial Bus (USB) controlers. If this selection isnt expanded already, click on the + icon next to it.
In the list that pops down, there will be an entry called IPod and it will have a yellow question mark on it. Right click on this, choose properties and then click on update drivers. Follow the install wizard and then voila! It will be installed.
Uninstall all Sansa software using the add/remove programs function. Reinstall software from Sansa CD. Then and only then plug the mp3 player into the computer.
