Find the problem, some linkage is sticking and you have to trace it through. Spray with WD40, then when working spray with other light oil, cause WD40 does not stay. Most likely the carriage return release . Take bottom off and watch what it hits on the left side, Also the tab button locked down will do this.

SOURCE: carriage return problem

The tab button may be stuck or the carriage release lever is stuck or a broken escapement.

What do you need help with? Hp Deskjet 2645 is showing error code and it refusrs to print

The carriage that goes back and forth when printing may not be moving freely. Turn off all power and see if you can move it back and forth easily. If not, put a drop of light oil on either side of the cartridge holder and slide it back and forth. You can also clean off the carriage rod with a cloth before oiling.
If this does not clear up the error code, the main board has failed and it will not be worth repairing, unless the unit is under warranty.

What can I do about a carriage that shudders when I turn the machine on but it does not move freely. I have a SC 110 electric typewriter

Usually it is because of some obstruction, or the main shaft is gummed up.

Open the cover to check if there are no foreign objects lying in the way of the carriage.
Also, part of the packaging included a rubber sleeve that stopped the carriage from sliding around during shipment. It may be still there, who knows?

You may also try a few drops of oil, preferably the sewing machine type.

If you turn the machine OFF, can you manually slide the carriage back and forth?

How do you unlock a De Ville 410

Are you saying the carriage is locked, so it can't go back & forth? Sticking out of the right-hand side of the carriage are two tabs; I think they're light blue. Pressing down one one locks the carriage. Pressing down on the other unlocks it. When the carriage is unlocked and moves out of the way, you can see the ramps and notch molded into the bottom of the case to hold the carriage for shipping.

Dosen't sound to good. While it's off try moving the carrier (print head) back and forth it should move freely if not put some WD40 on the silver shaft it slides on.

Have a Smith Corona Electra 110. The ribbon doesn't turn, whether it is set to go one way, or the other. The side that's driving the ribbon makes a little **** with the keystroke, but goes back to starting...

Make sure that the ribbon has been intalled into the reverse guide forks on either side where the ribbon comes out of the spools. The ribbon should have a rivet in the fabric near the end of the ribbon so make sure you have the proper ribbon. The machine may require lubrication. You might also try taking the ribbon out and moving the R side to the Left just so you can type a little bit. Thsi may loosen the mechanism.
