One morning I turned on my TV and no picture; sound is fine. I bought a new lamp but that did not fix it. I paid a Sony repair man to come by and he says something like the "Q" board is bad. a new board is ~ $471.50 with a trade in. Does all this make sense? the TV is 20 months old and will cost me ~$800 to fix as he wants $300 to R&R the board? Can I R&R this myself?
I looked at my noytes and found it was called a QBOX card. Sorry about that. I can still turn on the TV and hear sound perfectly. The screen is dimly lit, evenly across the front. I do not think it is the lamp.
Might this point to a QBOX card? Should I buy one on my own and replace it?I looked at my noytes and found it was called a QBOX card. Sorry about that. I can still turn on the TV and hear sound perfectly. The screen is dimly lit, evenly across the front. I do not think it is the lamp.

i see a couple possibilites. im not going to rule out a bad lamp. the lamp does come on sometimes. i have seen faulty lamps display this sympton. since it gives no error codes (blinks) and then does not shutdown. i feel this is a deeper cuircit board problem that a tech might need to troubleshoot. how long has it been since lamp been replaced
Hi it sounds like it could be an issue with board that powers the lamp ,it's called the ballast. When you put a new lamp in the ballast has to provide more power ,when it starts to go weak it will not light up.Sometimes you can put your old lamp in and will work fine.Try partstore.com they might have it right there.Hvae a blessed one!

It is symptom of weak Lamp (bulb) that requires replacement. You can buy Sony original lamp from Sony Accessories Store. Lamp required for KDF-42WE655 part number is as follows.. A1606034B
LAMP BLOCK XL-2100U
You are hearing the spark gap mounted on the lamp ballast board. If you can hear that sound, that means everything in the lamp driver circuit is working except the lamp!
Clean the cooling fans, specifically the lamp cooling fan located inside the rear cover, above the optical blocker. This is easily blocked with dust and causes overheating of lamps/shortened life.
