Motherboard supporting both windows-98 and win-XP-pro
Hi, this is ddy sharman,
I want to upgrade my 'intel-P3-600-cpu & 810-mobo' desktop system.
Is there anyone who could suggest me :-
1) Latest cpu and mobo which supports both 'Windows-98' and
'Windows-XP-pro'.
2) The motherboard should also support atleast one IDE Hard
Disk Drive.
3) The RAM specification in excess of 1GB.
Budget is not an issue though, i am planning to go for a 'core 2 duo', but scared of the idea whether it will support both the OS or not, and which motherboard that conforms the above.

It would be difficult to advise you as to which board to go for, as there are many different things to take into consideration, i would look at www.ebuyer.com and choose one then do a google search for any buyers comments.
The problem with Win 98 is that newer mobo,s will not have driver support for it, as with Win98 you have to continually revert back to your win98 cd to install certain files which are no longer compatible with new boards.
If you wish to dual boot a system; using XP and vista would be more suitable for the type of hardware you will be using.

One is to replace the whole motherboard but that would probably also entail new ram, cpu, cooler, graphics card, even maybe a new PSU.
Two is to fit a pci usb 2.0 card.
You said you did TWO but it didnt work. I am not sure why without more details but if you are using windoes 95 or less than that would be a major problem.
Only the later windows 98 and above can really make full use of USB 2.0 and even with 98 and win ME you would need to make sure he correct drivers were installed too.
The motherboard really isn't your worry. Windows XP pro requires a 300 megahertz or higher processor. You motherboard can take from 100 to 400 megahertz, so you need to know what your CPU is. If your running an intel P4 chip, and at least 128 mbs of ram, and you have at least 2 gb's of hard drive space left on your hard drive, then you can run XP Pro.
hi im josh in cebu phils. it is very simple frnd. you try to install windoxs xp sp2 or sp3 so that you will not need to install driver for sound. or just get an update of your xp professional. good luck!
Hi glycogenic open up the case and look for a motherboard model number on the motherboard (it could be anywhere) but sometimes in large print, then do a search with it on the net
ie Ethernet drivers for (insert mobo number) running XP MCE 2005. or something similar.
hi dale, itsnot a good thing when you see the blue screen of death, cause recent changes hardware normaly maybeif you have changed from intel to amd using mobo and all parts are amd now , maybe if you reinstalled your operating system the new hardware that is installed will accept you software cheers steve good luck
THANKS sandrew
your suggestion was wonderful...
