Sounds like there is no compatible driver installed to initiate the sound device to go active. Try to go to the Acer support/driver page and place your model in the search box and navigate to the drivers for that model. Look for the appropriate sound driver and download to a temp folder on your desktop. run the self installer and see id that clears up the problem. Good luck, ParrotHead PC Repair
Acer has a web site where you can download software for your Aspire 5580. Your Laptop has a intergrated sound chip, XP may not have installed the driver for your speaker/sound system. You can try downloading at the link below (page 2)," Audio driver v.184.108.40.20673", or you can install your audio driver from the restore CD that came with the notebook. No restore CD's! This site has everything installed onto your notebook.
