My webcam only shows colored lines

Webcams are useful in both personal and business functions, from video chatting to video conference calls. When your webcam displays strange colors, it is usually due to a problem that is easily fixed even without advanced technical abilities. By trying at-home solutions before sending the computer or camera in for service, you can save time and money.

Lighting
Lighting is a common cause of strange webcam colors. When your webcam does not have enough light, it compensates by adjusting settings internally. The adjustments can result in color shifts that are not true to life. Bright, diffuse lighting reduces the workload on your webcam and allows it to display colors as they are. The light source should be behind the computer and pointed at your face to reduce shadowing and provide an even light. Avoid light sources behind you, as they can cause extreme contrast between your face and the light. b> Webcam Settings b> Most webcams come equipped with customization settings that allow you to adjust the display. Changing the settings while watching a preview webcam image can help you fix odd colors on the display. The location of the video settings varies, but is often located in the Preferences, Settings, Configure or Video menus. Adjust the tint, contrast and brightness settings until the image shifts to a normal color scheme. Webcam Drivers b> Webcam drivers allow the camera to function properly. When your drivers are corrupt or out of date, they can affect even the most basic display abilities. Webcam manufacturers publish the most recent driver downloads on their websites, usually on the individual product page, along with instructions for installation. To allow your computer to communicate with the webcam and use the drivers, run a software update to install any recent versions. b> Special Effects b> Some webcams come with built-in special effects that allow you to customize the appearance of the video stream. If an effect was enabled during the last session, it may stay on when the camera is turned on again. Turning the effects off will usually resolve the problem. The location of video effect settings varies by webcam model and manufacturer. Logitech Video Effects are located using the mask button in the QuickCam menu. On a Mac, effects for the built-in iSight webcam can be changed in the Effects 1 and 2 menus in the Photo Booth application. Hope this helps.

you might have to remove your graphics card to make sure the socket is clean
restart your computer the reinstall it this should activate found new hardware wizard
if your computer came with a mother board disk the drivers could be on it

click start control panel display desktop you can select a different desktop from the drop down list
or a browse button where you can select different pictures this may vary depending on your operating system

also you can change the settings for more or less pixels or from the drop down list pick the appropriate level of color range or troubleshoot also select advanced then general dpi normal size,larger size or custom settings
always click APPLY after making any changes

Click Window Color and Appearance.

Under Window Color and Appearance, click the color you want, and then click OK.

Try to plug in this monitor to another pc. If it still does not show an image you may have to replace the monitor.

You can easily fix this yourself, one of the quickest ways to fix it is to print 10 doublesided blank pages and it will clean the inside of the machine for you and the line will vanish.

For further print quality problems on this machine follow these instructions to troubleshoot.

When troubleshooting image quality problems, it is important to understand the situations in which the problem occurs.

Print a copy of the color test pages to determine whether the problem is in one color or more than one color.

1. Press the [Up] or [Down] arrow button on the Control Panel to select [Troubleshooting] on the Display Screen, and then press the [OK] button.
2. Press the [Up] or [Down] arrow button to select [Print Quality Problems], and then press the [OK] button.
3. Press the [Up] or [Down] arrow button to select [Color Test Pages], and then press the [OK] button to print the test pages. If the problem occurs with one color on the test pages, perform the solutions for this problem. If the problem occurs in more than one color on the test pages, restart your search and select a case for the image quality problem occurring through all colors.

According to many respected sources with far more expertise than myself, the symptoms you are describing also fall within the realm of Canon CCD failure. In Canon's Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory, they outline the most common symptoms (distorted images, LCD showing only a black screen, etc.). They have conveniently limited the description to the bare minimum. More symptoms of the failing CCD include: pictures appearing on LCD show up with severe color variations (pink-purplish or green tint), colored "streaks" or "lines" throughout pictures, and wavy distortions in image. Most of these symptoms include the color variations, but not always. The lines or waves can appear in any direction and with varying degrees of severity. Some LCDs do not go black, but turn totally purple. Here is a link to a very informative article that should clear up any questions you might have.

If nothing else, call the Canon Customer Support Center at 1-800-828-4040. They will ask questions to identify whether or not you are having the same symptoms as described in the Product Advisory. I have been through this twice, and both times they were very nice and very helpful. Even if you don't qualify for the free repair, it didn't cost a thing to find out.
