Maxtor 120 gb harddrive cant read it on older home pc

My maxtor portable 120 gb hard drive running on work pc, with windows xp service pack 2 works fine, when i take it home running on windows xp tried service pack 2, now on 3, working on a 5 year old pc, it knows there is a driver their, though states it''unknown device and error has occured with the device'' once or twice i have recognised it, by luck more than anything, justy unplugging, then plugging in, when it has worked it states it is not working as fast as it could,

my 2gb stick file also does not work, though an older slower smaller stick files works fine, im guessing it something to with the drivers or the hardware of the usb ports, though i really no nothing!

maxtor seem to be a endless loop of no answers and no way to contact their support center.

any ideas

thanks

phil

You indicated that you have 2x achieved connectivity on the home pc. This is a good indication of a problem with the USB port. You may want to acquire a USB card for the motherboard. This alternative access to the computer could solve the problem. Cost for a replacement card can be as low as $20. Use a screwdriver to open the case, install the card and go.

Maxtor 3100 installation

It's Plug N Play. XP will see it (Found new hardware), and will install the drivers for you and assign it a drive letter and you will see it in MY Computer. However, there may be some other features and drive options you might like on the disk.
I have anexternal USB harddrive myself and am planning on gettng another very soon.

Internal Hard Disk Upgrade

Yes, there is. Match the type of drive (Serial ATA or Parallel ATA) you get with what you have. Make sure your Satellite sees the drive in the BIOS. For drives larger than 120 GB, recommend operating systems Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or higher) or Vista. Older OS's have a 137 GB limitation (they only see the first 137 GB of the hard drive despite its size).

USB External hard drive 160 GB not recognized by desktop Windows XP OS

Very possible your problem is that this drive is not externally powered and your desktop does not put out enough power to drive it.  I'm guessing your desktop is older.  Especially if your desktop is USB 1.0 this problem would occur.  Your best bet in this case is to either mount a newer USB expansion card into your desktop, or get another externally powered harddrive and transfer data over to it from this one with your laptop.
