or maybe the phone line has somehow had the message bank activated and the call coming in does not get to the panasonic cordless phone answering machine before being diverted to your phone line message bank.

The voice mail and message service for your landline phone is provided by your landline service provider. If you did not receive a printed booklet directions for your landline phone service, I suggest you call your landline telephone service provider Customer Service number (Telkom) and ask for one.

No - do you have the base connected to a landline? - Does the phone display show check tel line? I am assuming this is your typical home cordless phone. Is there power to all the handsets? If the screen is blank - you may have a bad battery. More information would help.

base unit is connected to the landline and operates any hand set that is picked up
make sure all handsets have the end call button pressed as one not pressed after use may keep a line open
call your provider to check the land line to your premises
borrow a neighbours phone and plug it into the socket and see it you get a line on their phone

Replace the jumper cable between the wall jack and the phone. You've probably installed a "roll over" cable by accident.

Check cable conections from phone box on wall to base unit, make sure that the conectors are fully inserted. If possible plug a different phone into box to make sure that line is working. Hope this helps

This is more than likely due your phone carrier providing you with a voicemail system on your phone that picks up before your answering machine. Depending on who you have you can call your own number from either another or your landline. Once you hear the message indicating that your voicemail box is full press the '#' key. If the mailbox prompts you for a password, enter the last 4 of your phone number. However if it doesn't prompt you, try the '*' key and enter the last 4 of your phone number as the password. If neither of these work then call your phone company and ask them to reset or remove the voicemail system, depending on your preference.
I usually see this system set up on phone systems that are provided by the same company as your internet service provider. In particular AT&T and Broadstripe both offer these kinds of voicemail systems and are usually activated when the phone system is activated as just part of the activation process.
