Try running a cleaner disc in the unit if that doesnt work try the following.
Starting at my computer... Right click on my computer icon.
Go to properties.
Then Hardware tab then go device manager. Right click on cdrom in device list. Select uninstall then reboot the computer. If this doesn't help replacing the unit will be necessary.

I would suggest to read on the owners manual first before operating your machine.and you can avail of the warranty if you found problem n your playaer...
If you used to play those discs before and then suddenly it stops reading, then you might need to clean your lens that reads the disc.
Do you have a cd cleaner? Go and insert it and play for 30 seconds. It this still does not work, you can open your ps2 cover and
manually clean the lens with a soft ear bud damped in
an alcohol and gently wipe the lens surface. Also if you have a blower,
you can blow those dust off.
Check and replace the laser pickup unit. It is faulty [Weak]. If you wish to get some details; visit the site linked here. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Some models of PIONEER cd players had radio frequency problems that caused them to work on and off. Are you near any radio or braodcast towers? Poorly shielded power supplies cause this as well. A weak laser diode in the pick-up assembly in model runs could be the problem. You might want to Google the model number and see if this is common for these units.
If you switched to a different brand of DVD's try using the brand you used before. DVD burners are tested with certain brands of DVD's and sometimes the brands that aren't on that list don't work.
