I have my laptop for a long time. Suddenly it stopped working and most of the time I can't even both it. I called sony support and they could not help me fix it over the phone and said I would have to send it for repair. The shipment and the repair will cost me a lot of money, I was wondering if there is a simple fix for this problem if not I would rather buy a new laptop and not fix this old one.
Any help will be highly appreciated!

Hi Lisa, I am not an expert and I am also new at this site. But I believe I have a solution for you!
I had this problem before with a similar model. It is usually a problem with the memory chip or memory slot:
1. Remove one of the memory chip
2. replace it with a sony compatible memory chip.
* not all memory chips works with sony so you have to make sure!
If it is the slot:
1. compare it with the working slot to see if there is any difference.
2. If there is a bended solder try to bend it back to the correct position.
3. If you can't find the problem you might want to buy a larger memory chip and work with only one slot.
Good luck

If the BIOS does not have the USB as one of the boot options then you cannot boot up with an USB memory stick. In this case you need to replace the CD/DVD drive with a new one.
my laptop is sony PCG-7173L. No thing display on screen and i even cant shutdown and there is no power led on power button and no sound of fan too....i cant go to advance boot option also..Please can any body help me...
Use Restore System; Restore Computer to Factory "New" Condition.. Sont Vaios have a Key Prompt which you hold down while booting and the Replacement Software already on a Sector of the Hard Drive. Check THe Manuel for this OR CALL SONY CUSTOMER SERVICE AND JUST GIVE THEM THE MODEL NUMBER AND ASK THEM WHICH BUTTON YOU PUSH ETC TO RESTORE THE COMPUTER TO "FACTORY CONDITION"
you want to be looking for the rtc(real time clock) which is a little unit not much bigger than ur thumb nail.next to it youll find the battery(sometimes heat sealed with plastic.)if you remove this battery for about 5 mins then replace it or in ur case maybe renew it this will reset bios to factory(also method for bypass passwords as every thing is reset)
you might also wanna check ur video card.(connections and dust)
