Sounds like there is a bad connection somewhere on your
screen.
Is the computer new? If it is, send it back to where it came from for a repair.
If it is not new and it has passed its warranty, then you may have to take the Basel of the screen and
see if there are any sockets that are not connected properly. The problem with
doing this, with SOME laptops, you have to take off the main cover off the
laptop before you can take the Basel
off the screen.
If you do need to take it apart, please touch something like a metal plug sockets
screw or a unpainted radiator pip before you do this to get rid of any static
you gave on you otherwise the is a chance of permanently damaging you computer
the connections inside laptops are usually just thin wires that go into sockets
and the clips that secure the cables lift up and the cable can just be pulled
out or inserted with ease. If you can open your laptop and check the
connections, just firmly push them all in to make sure they are all connected
properly
Good Luck

To date, HP has refused to repair these defective laptops despite being fully aware that the problems do exist. The only real solution that I'm aware of is to write to the BBB (the one in California located near HP's Executive Offices). HP agreed to repair my laptop at no charge after I went this route. To the best of my knowledge, they replaced the display as I no longer have the vertical lines. It appears that they may have also reduced the processor speed as the computer runs much cooler than it ever did before HP made the repair. It's been several months since the repair was made and, so far, no problems whatsoever. Hopefully that will continue.
