A writing table is usually has a sliding tray that is built into a piece of furniture, the tray slides out so you have a flat horizontal surface to write letters on.
A drafting board is a large board that is attached to a stand that allows you to tilt the board at any angle. These boards are used by draftsmen and architects to produce drawings of buildings and engineering structures.

Writing tables will have polished surfaces whereas drafting boards only have a smooth surface and may also have pinholes on the board that used drawing pins to fix drawing papers to the board.

These two tables usually look very similar. If the drafting table was at a flat setting with the height set at regular desk height (maybe 74 cm) then it looks just like a writing table. The way to tell if it's a drafting table is if there is an edge on one of the sides. The edge was used to stop things from sliding off the table when the table was at an angle and it would sometimes hold writing tools.

Do I need a board cover for my drafting table?

Yes, you should get one. This cover is typically made from vinyl and is a good surface for drafting. It protects the table surface from tool damage and from pen marks. Don't forgot to clean the cover so old pen marks will not smudge new drawings.

How do I pick out a drafting table?

The first step is deciding how much money you want to spend. You can find cheap drafting tables for around $150 or really fancy ones for around $800 such as this one http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?categoryId=cat1850041&productId=prod1617041

A Hann drawing table can cost upward of $1000.

The second step is if you want the table for a short or long period. If you want one for a short-term period then it is wiser to buy a cheaper one than to invest in a great one. If you plan to buy a new one in a couple years, then go for a cheaper one. Cheap and short term tables are generally folding tables. Long term and more costly tables are those with four sturdy legs. The last thing to consider is space. Foldable tables take up much less space than the big, sturdy tables.

Why are drafting tables made out of steel?

A. Most modern drafting tables are made from steel because steel is really strong, but also portable. Old tables made from wood were really strong but difficult to transport or move around. To make the table even easier to transport, the surface is attached with screws that can be unscrewed.

What is a drafting table (drawing table) made out of?

You can find old ones made from fancy wood and brass. I have an antique one like that in my house. My husband is an architect and he uses a table made of steel and plastic. Some of his colleagues have tables from metal with the surface made from safety glass.

I have an old craftsman table saw that I inherited and need a part that is no longer available from sears. It is a motor mount bracket at that how i describe it any clue on how to get one of these? ...

Dan, Take pictures of the area of your saw where the motor mount would be mounted, and any other mating parts (like the motor). Measure a few things like the distances between some of the holes. Go to Sears and look at the saws they have on display. You will probably find something similar that you would be able to use with little or no adaptations. Write down the model number, go to this link and look up the part. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action Please vote if this is helpful. Good luck, Al K
