I hope you don't mind, but I was wondering if you could shed some light onto why my PS2 suddenly stopped playing games. Games simply do not load, and when I try to access them through the Browser menu, I receive a constant "Reading disc..." message at the bottom of the screen. There is a loud ticking sound coming from the PS2, like the lens is attempting to move but not (??) or something like that.. games appear to be spinning, but not at a fast rate. The Diagnosis feature does not help either. This all happened overnight, which is the strange part. This is an SPCH-70012 model. The Serial Number is FS7423957. The Barcode Number is PK274239571. I'd appreciate any insight you had. Thanks for your time!
The main issue is there is a problem with the laser. You may be able to run Sony PS1 discs or Music CD's but DVD's are normally what quit working first. If you are inclined to open the system and it is out of warrenty you can do so. BE VERY CAREFUL There is a ribon cable that goes to the power button. Also there is most likely a LOT of dust in the system. and clean the lens of the drive. If this does not work, you'll have to replacement with new laser. laser type: khm-430b or pvr-802 of the same type. Hope this helps..

Ok so like, everyone above me has said the solution: replace the laser. But here it is, do not, I repeat, DO NOT put scratched discs into the drive. The laser will knock itself out of whack trying to read them, and you'll end up with the same problem. Trust me, I had to replace mine twice...

I tried this also. i cleaned the laser relentlessly for hours and it finally started to work. now it only reads cd or ps1 games, but not ps2 games. also i tried standing it up, and it worked after repeated attempts. but it stopped reading dvds agains, so i decided to change the laser eye finally after all that. the magnet is overpowering the motor and it wont spin fast enough to read dvd disc which is formatted different or heavier than a cd rom disc. the power to laser controls the speed to the motor which also controls the power to that little electromagnet built in next to the laser. not a good place to put it!!! just a bad design i think. it works for awhile but eventually the strain burns out or damages the laser eye. remember we are talking about something so sensitive to the slightest volt change in order to operate. and its a moving part too which make it even harder for it.

Possible laser failure sony claims only sony can fix them but you may find somebody who does it as a hobby

As said above the laser may be gone?
but you could contact sony tell them and get it replaced.
only if back as not been opened or tampered with in any way ,
as this will void the replacement .

I had the same problem with my son's PS2, I first used compressed air to blow out dust with no result. I then cleaned the laser lens with a wetted cotten swab and dried it with the other end. It's been working ever since. Saved me the cost of the much asked for XBOX 360.

i have the same problem
i have tried cleaning the lens. blowing out the system. cleaning the disk.
this thing sounds like clicking coming from inside the ps2. and says reading disc but me and my friend think it is from droping it earlier.
try to look inside the playstation to see if ining thing fell out

but it might have somting to do with the battery in between the big green thing wen its open

its a watch battery i no ther is 1 cuz iv seen it

will play ps1 games but not ps2
I have the same problem with my slim ps2.3 games will load but I just bought the guitar hero world tour and it will not load the game, it keeps spinning but nothing happens.
