Camera will not stay on!

My camera turns on, the lens open up but them immediately retract and the camera switches off. The battery has full power. I took the casing off but nothing was apparent, so I put it back together.

Have you made sure that the batteries are LiIon and fully charged? I had a similar problem with a Kodak Easyshare camera that required the higher voltage LiIon battery pack rather than alkaline AAs which will fit in there but is not exactly right.

I was just putting my camera in the case when I accidently turned it on, it beeped and I took it out of the case now the lens will not retract

Try taking the batteries out and put them back in. Turn the power switch on and then off and see if lens retracts.

Lens won't retract. Camera powers off immediately after powering on without retracting lens. New battery didn't help.

The lens will not retract and it makes a grind noise

I had the opposite problem, my lens would not full extend. It would immediately retract and turn back off. If you take a can of compressed air and blow it out as you cycle it on/off. It should clear whatever is preventing it from closing.

Here is what my problem was and how I fixed it.

What I did was get a can of compressed air (from the computer section) and blow air around the lens as I repeatedly turned it on. It took about five cycles, but I eventually cleared whatever was preventing the lens from fully opening.

Good luck.

Lens Error!

In My case, the lens was coming out part way a start up and pulling back in without camera coming on. Some times the screen would stay a dark blue and could not be shut off. Ensure batteries are new or remove and replace existing. Lens will come out part way and retract when the battery door is opoened and closed. Press "on" button and as the lens comes out touch and hold the lens, with a finger placing pressure on the side of the lens. The lens will stay out. With camera upside down blow into the sliding mechanisms of the lens. Grip the furthest most extened lens with two fingers and pull the lens all the way out with steading pressure. The pressure should be equivalent to lifting one to two pounds of bread with two fingers. Perform this with the camera upside down so that any dirt particles can fall out. A slight rocking (side to side motion) of the lens may help. Once fully extended, open and close the battery door. The lens should retract. Turn on the camera. A couple of ideas relatd to this problem 1) If the concentric circles of the lens are not even, this could indicate a large grain of sand. After lens is extended or partialy extended push the lens on the side where the largest gap is while the camera is upside down. This may provide a larger gap for the grain to fall out. 2) Dirty camera case. I turned my camera case upside down over a piece of white paper and was amazed at the particles of sand that fell out. I turned the case inside out and completely brushed and vacuumed the case.

Camera turns on then immediately turns off

Quick turnoff is normally a symptom of low battery power. Make sure that you have fresh/charged batteries in the camera. If fresh power doesn't solve the problem you will need professional service on the camera.

Not turning on and has strange smell

Powershot A640 Could Not Be Powered On, Burnt Smell

My Powershot A640 died during a picture shot, lens remaining open. I thought it may be due to the dead batteries. But after putting new batteries and pushing the on/off button, the on/off indicator blinked once then shut off by itself. After a while, a strange smell came from camera batteries area, and I could feel warm there too. Immediately I took out all the batteries from camera.

When checking the posts here the other day, I tried one solution and got the lens back to close: first took out the memory card from camera, then put the new batteries in; push the on/off button with no memory card. I found the lens retracted a little before camera shut off by itself. I pushed on/off button three times to get the lens fully close. However, the burnt smell came out again. I immediately took out the batteries.
Did I get a short circuit inside? Is there any ways to fix it?

My camera will not turn on

Hey Aunt CC,
What is most likely happening is there is something obstructing the movement of the lens (like a piece of sand), and that is why it keeps powering down immediately when you turn the camera on. Another cause of this camera powering down immediately could be the battery cover or memory card cover is open. If those covers are not open I would have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician.

Sincerely,
Allan

Lens won't open and retract.

It sound like a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
