Screen issues

In the customer menu first look for convergence--if this is Akai it is made by Samsung.

in the convergence menu will be either a grid of lines or several crosses--examine and see if your red line is out of position there.

If it is it may just require with the remote adjustment in that menu.

Cleaning will not resolve a red line.

let me know what you find.

The red is wavy and doesn't line up

Sounds like you are trying to adjust convergence through the menu setting on your TV. Make sure you are using that TV's original remote to make these adjustments. If you are unable to make these adjustments then typically it is because one or both of your TV's convergence chips are burnt and need to be replaced. You can find these chips fairly easily but make sure you are purchasing OEM chips made by Sanyo. Sanyo made the majority of the convergence chips for most major brand rear projection TV's. You can find good quality chips at convergencechips.com. Hope this helps,James

Toshiba 42h83.... The blue convergence will not line up. The horizontal will but the vertical will only move so far. when touch focus starts the reds and greens are perfectly strait the blue vertical is...

bmarino18,

Initially I would have told you to replace the convergence ICs but after reading your post carefully I think you could have a problem with the convergence box. The lines can only be bent/curved for two reasons. One - the yokes are bad causing an undue strain on the power supply and not being able to correct the problem. Two - the convergence box/board is bad and is not holding the settings causing the curve you see. I cannot tell you which problem you have. You wil have to determine this. I do have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4273935-replace_digital_convergence_box which may be helpful.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Picture is saturated in green with vertical wavy white lines"

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Toshiba tp48d50 has vertical red wavy lines on

These Toshiba TVs are well known for convergence problems. When you put the convergence test pattern on the screen, does it appear normal? If there are curves in the crosshair lines and colors flairing from them, you have just such a failure. The convergence output ICs will have to be replaced. You'll spend $300-$450 to have this fixed.

JVC AV 56WP74 Problem after fix

Will the colors move into alignment controlling them manually?
If you can get the colors to align but they simply won't hold it's a matter of programming. If they won't align you still have a failure in the convergence circuit. If red or blue will only move so far but not close enough to align you have an amp problem.

No horizontal red convergence control

Probably the red convergence output IC has failed. The chip is basically a stereo amplifier that serves as a horizontal amplifier and a vertical amplifier. I suspect the vertical part has failed and is not uncommon. Should be generic STK392-150's or maybe STK392-110/120 I believe. By the way when the line moves up and down that means the vertical is working when it moves side to side the horizontal is working.
