Printer will not print black ink

Even with a new black cartridge, my printer will not print any black text. The printer is 4+ years old and has worked fine, but suddenly started having problems.

The printer is not printing black ink. Running the nozzle check operation resulted in missing black pattern. Many attempts of deep cleaning did not result in any improvement.

My Canon i850 printer will not print black ink. I have run the deep clean several times but it still won't print. Anybody know what is causing this? I put in a new cartridge and it still will not print.

Black and white test prints some lines and not others. Changed black cartridge but it still does not work. Colored photos seem to print fine. Tried changing printer set up but it still does not work.

black ink doesnt print. all other colors do

  • Anonymous Aug 24, 2008

Exactly the same problem with black not printing on the Canon i850. Changing the paper type from Plain Paper to something else does seem to fool it into printing, however. A hassle but at least it works....

  • Anonymous Sep 14, 2008

Prints but does not really print, even witha new blackink catridge!

Thanks for the tip! It worked for me.

Chewbacca08's solution gave me an idea. I set the print setting to photos paper (even though I was trying to print on plain paper) and IT WORKED. It's worth a shot before you trash a perfectly good printer.

I had the exact same problem, so I changed the paper type (in printer options) from plain to "photo". Now the black text is printing fine. And it is using the black text cartridge to do so. Sensitive little printer huh? The Canon i850 is suposed to be a photo printer, so I think that is how Canon attempts to justify black text printing NOT being a default mechanism. Still though! Pretty hard to believe that they wouldn't predict this usage situation and make it a default. Good luck Draeden. Canon- your market research people are fired!

Peace, love, and soul ya'll. I'm up out dis beezee like I stole somethin'.

Pop out the printer head by pushing in on tab in front, lift up holder and remove head. I soaked it in rubbing alcohol--just enough to cover screens, about 5 min. Rinse with water till clear, dry and reinstall--Worked great!

Your printer might be set different than plain paper setting. We had the same problem when ours was set for photo glossy plus while using plain paper.

I had the same problem. My color cartridges printed fine, but the black did not print -- just blank. I called Cartridge World and they suggested the problem could be a clogged line. They recommended a nozzle rocket cartridge, sort of a "Drano" for print cartridges. I brought in my black cartridge and they dumped the black ink and filled it with a cleaning solution (at no cost). I placed this back into the printer and proceeded to start printing multiple pages in black in order to allow the solution to move through the lines and break up any clogs. It took about 30 pages, but the light gray color finally began to come through (it should look light gray, not black). I was told to try and use the entire cartridge before replacing with a regular black ink cartridge. Worked great!

Also had this trouble with my Canon MP370 so changed the paper type to phototype glossy and it works - thanks so much!! Think I will be able to load this so I don't have to set it every time.

SOURCE: Lexmark Z517 wont print black ink

I have a z600 that i use. If not used for about a month the ink does clog the print nozzles and eventually ink cartridge does dry out. To avoid this even if i dont have to print anything I run a diagnostics test that prints out a nozzle aligment test every two weeks. The great thing about this is that it uses very little ink.You can find this test in your software that was provided by Lexmark. This will keep your nozzles cleaned and you will notice this helps extend the life of your cartridge.

I have a HP 8259 printer and it indicates the yellow print cartridge needs to be replaced even when i install a new cartridge. It will not let me print in color or black/grayscale. I have had the printer...

Older printers can do funny things. It is probable that the little copper contacts on the ink cartridge are not making good contact with the printer which is giving bad information to the computer that the ink cartridge is empty. A two year old printer may have some corrosion on the printer's contacts. Remove the ink cartridge and use a soft pencil eraser to clean the printer's contacts.

Does not print properly-even after installing brand new cartridge

most likely your ink nozzles have clogged up.
try several cleanings, if it still does not work, you probably have to get the printhead replaced.

My printer will not print text.

Did you try and change the ink cartridge mode from color + black to color, or vice versa? Another thing you can try is to "prime" the ink cartidges by taking them out of the printer and gently pressing on the print nossels to get the ink flowing, then put the cartridges back in the printer.

Color ink cartridge out. Won't let me print in black only?

Do this, press and hold the "Stop" button on the printer for 10 seconds that should clear the fault set by the empty ink cartridge.

Printer will not print black ink

Hi please try these steps:::

Right-click the printer icon, and then select 'Properties'.
2. Click the 'Maintenance' tab, and then click 'Deep Cleaning'.

maintdeep.jpg

3. Select 'All Colors', 'Black' or 'Color' for the print head to be cleaned.

allcolorsorblack.jpg

4. Read the message displayed, and then click 'OK'. The power lamp blinks and print head deep cleaning starts. (Do not perform any other operations until print head deep cleaning is complete. Print head deep cleaning takes about 1 minute.)

IF ABOVE STEPS DOESN'T WORK TRY THESE STEPS BELOW

Check ink tank vent hole The ink tank requires air to flow through it so ink can move from the reservoir to the print heads.

  1. Confirm there is no orange tape across the top of the ink tank

  2. If the orange tape is as shown in Figure (1), it is properly removed.

    ink_tank_tape.jpg

    *BCI-3's shown in this example.

  3. If the orange tape is as shown in Figure (2), remove the remaining tape to the level shown in Figure (1).

  4. Make sure each ink tank is snapped into the printer.

IF THESE STEPS DIDNOT WORK THEN YOUR PRINTER NEEDS REPAIR(You might need to change the printer head.)

Printing without color?

Im sorry to inform but yes, Epson ink jet printers require all of the ink cartridges to have ink in them in order to print any color, black and white, or grayscale images. Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when users are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged for color printing and prevent air bubbles from entering the color print nozzles which can damage the print head. Therefore, once one of the cartridges are expended, the printer signals you to replace the cartridge in order for printing to continue.

Check that your black ink cartridge has ink inside, eventually try a new cartridge , as ink may have dried up in old cartridge.
If you use a new cartridge ensure you removed cellotape from cartrige.
If cartridge is ok, then it is printer nozzle/head for black ink.
In this case do nozzle check / head cleaning in printer tools a couple of times.
If problem persist you may need to check and clean printer's head with cotton and solvent.
